First year G1 toys

Recommended Posts

OK, same as with the monster bots I had these guys down off the shelves for dusting and took some photos. Now that we've had several generations since the G1 toys first came out, what do people think of the classics? Obviously characters such as Optimus, Megatron and starscream have endured throughout subsequent generations but these toys were where TFs began. Even though they're 20 years behind the times and some of them have next to no articulation, I still regard these as some of the best toys produced in the line. Maybe it's the fact that they are the most popular characters and that they featured so prominently in the cartoons and comics clouding my judgement. What do people think?

They are nice but not the best toys produced in the G1 line but they are cool, who doesn't like a toy that resembles a real gun and that turns into a robot?

They were the very first but if you compare tham with today's stuff, they sure show their age. Apart from that they still have the fun factor behind. Not the best toys but fun toys indeed

They certainly don't have the PLAY value of the newer figures, and they don't have the articulation of stuff like the BT/Alt line.

But the nostalgia factor........:)

Some of my favorite TFs in my collection are G1s - oddly enough, my most treasured one is a poor conditioned G1 Broadside, the triplechanger EVERYONE hates. Why is he so treasured? Because he is the ONLY transformer I've hung on to since I was 5 years old. Doesn't even have half of his stickers, and doesn't have any accessories. Rusted screws.

But I won't give him up for anything.

I agree, I think they're better off being classed as memorabilia and fun homages to (lost) youth. As toys go, the ones available now a re in most ways far superior, except maybe for some of the colours used (energon scorponok comes to mind, but then again G1 scorponok can't talk!!) and the fact that the alt modes don't resemble real cars. (in the case of armada/energon not binaltech of course)

They are part of our memories as kids for the most of us, they will allways be close.

It was a great toy line, but I think that if it wasnt for the cartoon and comic to give the character personality and set up a storyline, they wouldn't be so great. Characters has alwasy been what made TF cool. Dont get me wrong, I love G1 as much as anybody, but they weren't very good toys. To any who disagrees, I offer a test to prove my point. Take Energon Towline and drop it on the floor. Nothing happens. Now do it to G1 Ironhide. you get a much different result. Still though, despite a large number of them being unposeable bricks, I still played with them as much as any other toyline....they just didnt hold up to a lot of action

Current TF's don't have the charm and as well as die-cast. G1's still rule IMHO.
