Animated Ultra Magnus review

Recommended Posts

I got this Ultra Magnus from TRU for $10 on Wednesday because the packaging was bashed in, but the figure was in excellent condition, so I got an excellent deal. Even if it were a sub par figure, which it's not, I wouldn't be disappointed.

Alt Mode:

This is Magnus's weakest mode. It's plain and angular. It doesn't fit in well with animated and, even when you have all the guns deployed, it's boring and static. The only good part is the exceptional laser noise, which happens to he loud, energetic and NOT annoying, which is a rare combination. Too bad I ended up taking out the batteries anyway.

The most unique and cool part of this mode is how the turrets pop up from the laser guns, which was just awesome. Over all, Magnus's alt mode gets a 7/10 for being so bland.

Transformation:

Magnus's transformation is frustrating because the soft ratcheted hinges are just SO damn TIGHT and you can't get much leverage on them. However, barring any frustration I have with moving the parts, it's a really nice transformation that's well endowed with everything awesome Animated gave us: It's deceptively simple, it's wonderfully clever and it's effective as hell.

I give Magnus's transformation a 9/10, a point knocked off for basically be a transforming box.

Robot Mode:

Magnus's robot mode is Magnificent. It's tall, imposing and stoic. It's impressive, calm and menacing. It's the most perfect representation of an Animated character I've seen. It's just amazing.

I absolutely love the shoulders on this guy. The many ways you can pose the shoulders on this guy really give him some character. It's a neat effect that's well done that keeps his shoulder pads from being static on the torso or on the arms. It's hard to explain, but it works well.

The legs are the only weak point on this guy, as he does have some balance problems and the ratchets are a bit too far apart. To fix some of the balance issues, I fold the cannons on his back slighty down to fill out the gap underneat his chest and put more of the weight forward and lower.

I give Magnus's robot mode a 10/10 for being awesome.

Summary:

I can't reccomend this guy enough, but good luck finding him in stores now. The last time I checked Ebay he was going for around $30, which, with shipping, is about normal retail.

In case you didn't notice, the laser noise has been borrowed from Cybertron Crumplezone.

Awesome Review. It would of been better with Pics :)

I haven't had a camera in a while. When I get one I'll start putting in pictures.

@FTcsap:

I never had Crumplezone.
