"I wish James Cameron Directed the Transformers films"

Recommended Posts

Slight Spoilers ahead:

I saw "Avatar" last night in Digital 3D. What can i say? My eyes were blown away. It is the best film I saw in 2009. Perhaps the best film I saw the last 5 years or so. It gave me that "little kid feeling" feeling I had when I saw Return of the Jedi, the same feeling I had as an adult when I saw "Return of the King." The film is a masterpiece. James Cameron came through and blew our eyes to hell the visual beauty of "Pandora" and its inhabitants. Although many can say that the plot is a retread of films like "Dances With Wolves," I see nothing wrong with it. Great Sci-Fi should take what we find familiar and give us something new.

The reason why I bring this up in a Transformers board is because i couldn't help but think, "Imagine if Cameron had directed Transformers."

Don't get me wrong. I don't hate the Bay films. I loved the first film. LOVED IT. RoTF was originally a slight disappointment for me, but that has actually improved since I brought the DVD home. Bay knows action and knows how to direct an action sequence. not taking anything away from Bay, but I would love to see what Cameron would have done with the Transformers franchise.

I have a feeling many of the things we Transfans loved to complain about (too much focus on human characters, Flames on Optimus, toilet humor, robot looks, etc......) would probably have never seen the light of day in a Cameron directed Transformers film.

The effects in the Transformers films have pushed the limits of SFX, however the world created by Cameron in "Avatar" completely blew me away. The attention to detail was ridiculous. The implementation of 3D was amazing. I wish this film forces the release of future films using 3D.

Michael Bay is an action director. I like his films, I really do. However, although he directed the most successful film of all time (Titanic), James Cameron is a Sci-Fi director at heart. I have always felt Transformers was more Sci-Fi than Action when it came to the genre it represented. Like I said, although I like and own Bay's Transformers films (and look forward to part 3), I felt looking back that they were more action oriented than Sci-Fi. After reading the fake script release for TF3 and seeing how much Sci-Fi elements the writer of the fake script put into it, it put a few things into perspective.

We don't know what Bay and Co. have in store for us come Transformers 3, however, part of me hopes he studies "Avatar" and gives us something, not similar in story, but similar in the delivery. Sorry to be so long winded, but I really enjoyed "Avatar." Am I the only one who felt the same way?

Can we just merge this with the District 9 thread.

Can we just merge this with the District 9 thread.

Why? this is about "Avatar" and has nothing to do with "District 9."

yeah, but it's the same thing, "we want that guy to do are thing cause what he just did kicked ass"

I'm sure Avatar kicked ass, I'm going next week so, I'll be sure then. Here's the thing though. James Cameron put years into Avatar. Transformers, in all honesty was a movie idea pulled out of a hat to fill a summer spot. The fact that it did as well as it did was really an unexpected Hollywood fluke, and the second one was just riding the wave.

Bay was hired to do a job, he didn't step to the plate because he wanted the project, initialy his heart wasn't in it. If they hired Cameron, District 9 guy, Abbrams, or whoever the hell else, sure we'd get a different type of movie, but it still wouldn't have the creative heart that a film like Avatar seems to.

So really, before dreaming of this guy or that guy who would probably just make the same movie they just made but with Optimus Prime and Megatron, we have to find who would WANT to make a Transformers movie, and see it as more then just a job. James Cameron WANTED to make Avatar, he created it, it was part of him. Peter Jackson WANTED to do the Lord of The Rings. Sam Rami WANTED to make Spider-Man, it was something he dreamed of since he was a kid...

We gotta find our guy like that, otherwise whoever it is and whatever they've done, will be coming to the stage as nothing more then talent doing a job just the same as Micheal Bay. On no production level is heart being put into Transformers. As long as it keeps making money though, why should they care? Why should they change a thing?

I don't agree with that myself, it's just the way it is.
