ROTF console game -- voice acting?

Recommended Posts

I just need a quick clarification about something -- in the console versions of the ROTF video game (ehh), most of the voice acting, save for Megatron and Starscream I believe, are voiced by the original voice actors from the movie, right?

I just don't buy it... or there's just something else. Maybe the person in charge of directing the game screwed up how the voice actors were supposed to sound by telling them that mediocre sounded good?

Take Jess Harnell, for instance. Ironhide's voice in ROTF fits him rather well (gotta miss the western "flair" but still I think they chose a great voice for the character for the movies), but playing through the tutorial for the game on the 360 -- in which you are directed to your tasks by Ironhide -- makes me want to turn the volume off. Now, I know TF stuff isn't really known for "realistic voice acting", but honestly the guy doing Ironhide's voice in game sounds nothing like the movies' Ironhide voice.

So to clarify -- the characters are (for the most part) voiced by their movie counterparts, right? Am I just putting too high of a standard on a movie-based video game?

Yeah, this is kind of a half rant, half clarification topic. Excuse me. :(

It generally is the voice actors from the movie. Except for Megatron who is Frank Welker. And your wrong. That guy IS the guy that does Ironhide's voice in the movie. Same voice actor in the game as in ROTF. Same for Starscream.

I don't see what you don't like about it, he doesn't sound any different to me then he did in ROTF. But then again Ironhide wasn't memorable in ROTF at all in the first place.

Maybe it was just me, but Ironhide did sound a bit deep to me in the game. In fact I was convinced myself that it wasn't Jess Harnell as it sounds so much deeper than his TF1 movie voice.

I've got to say straight up that Starscream doesn't sound anything like he did in ROTF; in fact they way he sounded in the game, I wondered if he might be auditioning for a part in some "Metal Band"... :tfgrin

That right there. You hit the nail on the head. That might be the issue I'm having with it. Thanks!

What is there to be wrong about? All I said was I don't buy it... when I say that, I mean it doesn't feel as "authentic" as it does in the movies.

EDIT: Ohh, I can see how my third paragraph might be misconstrued. I meant that yes, I know it's the same guy, but I can't stand the voice in the game but I think the movie's voice is great. But as Th 4RL deal point out, the "deeper" voice might be the culprit that's throwing me off.

I don't have the game in hand per say, but I noticed this too. SS sounded nothing at all like the movie. It just seems too deep for the character in my opinion. Megs sounds like an old geezer but it wasn't that big of a deal to me.

SS sounded the way he did because they were going off of the way Starscream was portrayed in the first movie. Thats the only logical reason I can deduce. But if that is the case, that means that dialogue for the game was recorded before the VAs did anything for ROTF, which would also make sense as to why Ironhide sounds different.

Maybe Harnell didnt get to warm up for the game but the game warmed him up for the movie. Hell I dunno. If anything I'd wonder about Jazz. His voice sounds highly dubious.

I can actually confirm that most of the cast in the game is not the same who voiced the characters in the movie. Dare to compare.

Whats important is that all the major players are. Prime, Soundwave, Megatron, Starscream and Ironhide are all the real VAs. Maybe Ratchet but he sounds spot on regardless. You can hardly hold Breakaway, Sideways, Grindor and Long Haul to this standard since they didn't speak in the movie. Bumblebee sounds right but he's only had one line of dialogue and that was in TF1.

For what, his four lines? (Exaggeration, I know :doh)

:P That's not towards you or anything... I'm just still a bit miffed that Ironhide got the short end of the stick along with Ratchet when it comes to lines and screen time.

The only significant difference I noted was Starscream, who was, ironically, voiced by the same voice actor in the game and the film. I have no idea was his performances are so wildly different... maybe that's what the game director wanted, I don't know. I prefer his movie voice, though.

Well, Soundwave is different from the movie, too, but only because the folks behind the game wanted him to sound more like G1 than Dr. Claw.
