It was the same person that shot J.R Ewing that killed TransTech.

J.R.'s sister-in-law killed TransTech?!? :eek

hehehehehe

I saw that episode. :tflaugh1

Domo Argiganto Mister Roboto!

This is what bothers me about successful properties. After some initial success, they "become" what they are at that moment, and thereafter cannot deviate too far from what was originally established. Just looking at this from an artistic/creative perspective, that's the kiss of death. The enemy of originality is the status quo. "It's always been that way." Your comment about Beast Machines being close to the line makes sense, so long as G1 defines what Transformers are. But does it? It certainly started the series, but must TF always remain within the confines established in G1?

Only in the loosest sense, but that's one of the drawbacks of working in an established property, it offers very little permanent change.

To say nothing of the fact the fans often have a very narrow range of things they will accept.

Have we forgotten that Transformers has a TV continuity that ran (albeit not continuously) from 1984 to 2001? How many other cartoons can say that? How many other cartoons have evolved over time the way Transformers has? Not many.

Not a one, Transformers hold the record for the most incarnations of an animated property (with six.) But the story didn't really evole, just rehashed itself, when the story did evolve (Beast Machines) it was killed right after (for a myriad of reasons.)

I don't have trouble with the base concept (Beast Wars was great) but I do with shoddy writing (Armada and Energon primarily.)

Yeah, to be specific, I wasn't counting RiD, Armada, or Energon, as they aren't a step forward in the TF story but rather are their own things, unrelated to G1/BW/BM. The G1 to BM thing was what I was referring to. And if TransTech had followed... well maybe today we would be on its sequel, and we could genuinely say that we've had 20 years of Transformers.

LM speaks truth...*sigh*...he has made a great point with that "20 years of TF " stuff....hmmmm....

  • 2 weeks later...

I was REALLY hoping "Cybertron" would be Transtech.

Don't get me wrong, the actual Cybertron toys are great, it's just... :redface

Maybe next time. Oh great now I feel all bitter again.

Wow! The topic got bumped and I didnt even have to do it! :thumb

I think the *good* Cybertron figures rival some of the TransTech designs. I'm specifically thinking of Optimus Prime and Vector Prime (Starscream is such an obvious WW homage it's kind of pointless talking about him in any other context). Having had a few days to look at the Cybertron designs in more detail, I also like Jetfire a lot (though he is very "earth-styled"), but the rest of them are rather uninspiring. And Megatron looks ... I dunno, something's a bit off. Maybe that VERY pointy crest on his head... it looks too Japanese. But at least HasTak gave us a nice G2 Go-Bots Megatron homage with his car mode... :tflaugh

Not to turn this into a Cybertron critique or anything. I still think the TransTech designs had a fluid, organic quality that HasTak still hasn't matched, though. Cybertron Optimus Prime and Vector Prime are fantastic figures, but to me it's not quite the same. It's a different aesthetic and it's hard to say which is better -- it all depends on what you want Transformers to look like, I guess.

I dunno Megatron's car mode does sorta look transtechish

Oh yeah on a different note that Transtech Rattrap sketch looks almost identical to his transmetal form in robot mode.
