Are Store Exclusives Evil?

Recommended Posts

exclusives are good.  This is how many toys are able to see light.  If there were no exclusives there would be no re-issues, TFU Nemesis Prime, TFU Micromaster Defensor and Devestator, the silver repaints of the BW neo doinbots, Smokejumper and that other guy, etc.

My point is that if there were no exclusives, then these toys would probably have never seen the light of day.  That way you would never be mad because you had never seen them in the first place.  It is the whole "better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all" sort of deal.

The micros were all reissued by Takara. In fact, they are now cheaper from USA indie seller and on eBay than what you will find at KB. Granted, you wont get the green chase one, but why wouldn't you want the ones most like the real Japan versions? I do and find the way Hasbro reissues things patronizing when you end up with something not from one of the past series.

My point was that store exclusives are something that would not have been made, unless they were store had interest in making them. Most store exclusives are repaints of a prexisting figure, that can be had without too much trouble. If the origionals are prefered, then why are people complaining so much that they can't get the exclusives?

That's not always true. Just look at the Energon Megatron, that would have still been made if it hadn't become a Wal-mart exclusive.

It wasn't an exclusive, it was mass release. Wal-mart just had a deal to get them first.

The reason fan gripe is simple. Someone set their expectations. Namely Hasbro and KB Toys said, you can buy these! Its maddening to think you can pick up a cool Japanese toy in your area but most to of the time you go looking for them they got nothing. Gee, how strange their business is tanking?

We cant totally blame Hasbro since its KB who sells them. However, Hasbro is usually the source for the promotion of the items. When you get mad that you cant find stuff who do you blame?

I would also venture to guess most people dont know the Japanese versions are available at a very afforadble price. Till the reissues came out, a Sixturbo or Sixwing team set was a Holy Grail peice selling for $100+ easy. Now they hardly sell for $20 on eBay. Why you would want to pay $30 and hunt the catacombes of KB Toys is beyond me.

...by close to six months, which is enough to make or break the line. Because of Wal-Mart, most people won't pick it up if they see it in another store now, so the damage is done and it might as well be an exclusive.

Someone once told me, if you want the exclusives just be prepared to "pay" and put with grief for them. I think his advice still holds true.
