requesting help for a nOOb painter/kit basher

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

I am new here to the forums and I must say I am quite impressed with the work of the kit bashers that Ive seen on display so far. I am thinking of giving some modding and painting a try but I am at a loss as to what materials that I should buy before I start. To give an idea of what type of stuff that I am interested in doing, it would mostly be repainting with some minor to medium modding, probably similar to some of the Henkei/Universe Classic line Jazzes, Skywarps, etc. that Ive seen here on the forums. Could anyone give me a hand in determining materials that I should buy as a starting point, or perhaps point me to a site that would give me an idea? Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Oh, also...I doubt that I ll be wanting to mess with molding heads so, who is the reputable go to person(s) for casting replacement heads?

Heh, color me an idiot. The information that I needed was already readily available within these forums, stickied no less. Chalk one up to the guy who posts without first doing a little reading... :tfevil

Concerning the clear coat...when you re using the fusion paint should you use a flat white instead of glossy? I would think that the clear coat would give the paint a glossy finish anyway, or that glossy on glossy would yield poor results.

I agree with Mom on most of those items, but not on all. As far as paints go, I recommend Acrylic model paints for everything. An airbrush is also a sound investment. Along with the Testors Model Masters, I also recommend Tamiya Color Acrylic model paints. IT comes in a wide range of colors and even comes in a variety of colored clear coats (namely clear red, clear orange, clear yellow, clear green, clear blue, and clear smoke). These are great for things like window tinting, changing the color of light piped optics, adding color to metallics.

Along with Superglue, I also recommend using liquid plastic welder. It's a type of model cement that comes in a liquid form (obviously), and works by melting the edges of the plastic along the joint and evaporating, which, as the plastic hardens, fuses the two pieces, literally welding the plastic together. I recommend Ambroid Pro Weld. Plastic welder works on Styrene, Acrylic (Lucite or plexiglass), Butyrate, and ABS. It won't work on vinyl, polyurethane, nylon, or similar plastics like those. For those, you need the superglue.

Thanks for the added info, Tramp.

I think I may just make a list of things that im gonna buy and order them online. I stopped at the local Hobbytown USA after work and I gotta say I was kinda overwhelmed. I mean, they had dozens and dozens of different super glues. They had an entire aisle just for ADHESIVES. Heh, made my head spin, probably all of the fumes.

The guy I spoke with was kinda helpful, but they were out of the putty stuff that I was going to pick up along with a few other things while I was there so I decided against buying the rest because, well...theres not much point in buying paint when ya got other things to do before you paint.
