TFans Toy Reviews Thread

Recommended Posts

I know this ain't exactly a recent toy, but...here goes. My first review EVAH! (I mean it, I've never done a TF toy review in my life before, so please forgive me if it's bad.)

Tf line: Robots in Disguise

Name: Obsidian

Faction: Decepticons

Alt mode: (Stylized(sp?))Osprey helicopter

Note: For pics, try visiting Ben's World of Transformers. He has great pics of the two for comparison.

RiD Obsidian is a redeco of the Beast Machines toy of the same name. However, this is a redeco that far surpasses the color scheme of the original toy, which was a frickin' rainbow.

RiD Obsidian has a desert camo color scheme that covers his head, arms, alt mode cockpit section, and a good portion of the central section of his alt mode. Transluscent orange plastic is used for his eyes, the cockpit itself, his rotors, and the altmode tail fins. The rest of him is grey.

Obsidian's rotors can be pivoted thanks to ball joints connecting them to his alt mode's central section. They can also be fired as missiles by pressing a button underneath each of them.

As I can't describe his transformation scheme, visit BWTF for info.

Obsidian's bot mode looks great. The desert camo scheme really works with this mold. It also helps that he has (IMO) one of the BEST head sculpts known to man. The overall mold rocks, too. Obsidian's bot mode has 14 points of articulation. This is really good, considering that he's about the size of a basic.

One little nitpick, though. Obsidian's elbows have two joints each: a hinge joint and a ball joint. However, the ball joint in my RiD Obsidian's left elbow has become INCREDIBLY loose—to the point that it can't even hold ANY position.

Overall, he rocks. The left elbow problem is bad, but it's probably just mine.

Final Rating: 9.5

TAKARA RM-01 Robotmasters Convoy

Okay, last saturday, to my supreme joy, my RM starscream and Prime showed up. Now since BG already did a starscream review and since i have yet to see an RM Prime review, here is my two cents.

Packaging:

IMHO nobody beats the Japanese on packaging whether it be Transformers, Robotech, or gumball machine chibi toys, the Japanese know presentation. Bright and bold the carded/boxed package overwhelms you with art and information (all of which would be usefull i am sure if you can read Japanese :redface) I generaly find Takara's packaging much more pleasing than Hasbro's, but since i don't keep the packaging (except for MP convoy's) i guess it doesn't really matter a whole lot.

Robot Mode

At first glance you look at RM Prime and go, "Wow, he's small." but upon closer inspection and ample hours of posing, your next immediate respone is, "Wow, he's small, but DAMN he's cool!"

He has quite a bit of articulation; ball joints on the neck, shoulders, and hips. Swivel joints in the upper arms (ALA MP Convoy) Elbows, Knees, Wrists, and Ankles all bend appropriately. He also has a waist joint that allows him to turn this way an that, but be forwarned he has been known to break at this joint with excessive play.

Alot of the details that you can find on your MP Convoy and 20th Primes are molded into this little guy. For a figure that stands roughly 4-4.5 inches that's a lot of details. You'll find molded shocks on the legs and also the areas on MP Convoy that allow you to pull the hands into the arms are molded in as well. While none of these features work, it adds some incredible detail to such a small figure. This is G1 Prime down too a tee, I have decided that this prime was made to lead all your G1 rereleases into battle. He stands a head higher than Jazz and Prowl and is even in height with G1 Tracks.

All in all his robot mode is a georgous rendition of the character.

ALT MODE

Okay, i'll admit the Alt mode suffers. It's not only way to small but it has many problems as far as holding together. Like MP Convoy, it is clear that this mode was not the focus of the toy.

Accessorites

Much to my surprise, this little guy came with a multitude of accessories. Two sets of fists (one set for each of the two guns) Primes recognizable ion cannon (though Takara once again chose to go with the inaccurate grey/silver instead of black) an "energon" gun with a spring loaded missle, and an Energon Axe similar in style to the one that came with the MP version.

I am very happy with this version of the character. He's poseable, has alot of molded detail and looks like the G1 toy should have when it came out. All in all I'd give it a 6 out of 10 :thumb

Great Review Autofire... while i missed out on Obsidian during RID... i think i'm considering the Universe one

Thanks. :thumb
