Peter Cullen Cast as Optimus Prime?

Recommended Posts

you know, it wouldn't surprise me. this movie has hardly any big name actors/actresses assigned to it so there's no real reason why they couldn't bring in Cullen since he's about as well known as everyone else.

You're kidding, right?

No one in the general population has any idea of who Peter Cullen is.

:schin

Hmmm, I wonder how much the fanboizs are going to enjoy hearing Cullen's voice coming out of a Transformer that looks more like an Evangelion than a truck cab with arms and legs.

Indeed.

Me, I'm thrilled--

--and not because I think this is a G1 movie. I've made my peace with the fact that this movie is a reboot, just like RID and Armada were--

--but because I just think Cullen's a great voice actor who should do more character work and less announcer guy voice overs. But I think this will just end up doing more harm than good in most die-hard fans' minds.

I have a mental image of Don Murphy finally just breaking down, screaming and punching a fan in the face after the movie opens to the inevitable why'd-you-cast-Cullen-if-you're-not-gonna-do-everything-like-they-did-in-the-cartoon!? backlash :tflaugh

While I believe you are right...I pray you are not. People should get over this by now. Realize this is a new interpretation, and new Transformers. Just get over it, you Protectobots!

And yes this rocks ass! Go Cullen!!

And YET... this does tie down the movie a bit. I mean, hearing Cullen's voice coming out of Optimus Prime is going to create INSTANT G1 associations for old skool fans, which may or may not be what the filmmakers want. In fact, as has been implied, it might only serve to highlight the contrast between the film and G1, and not in a comfortable way.

I guess I just have a different approach to G1 purism... to me, G1 is a closed book. So.... I mean, yeah it's cool to have Cullen as Prime and all, but...... I dunno

Yeah I agree.

Honestly I wanted Cullen as Prime. But to me I can separate G1 from Movieverse TF easily. It's not a big deal to me. We've had G1 and had lots of G1 Homages and such since then. Time for a bit of the new stuff, which I hope this movie brings (and expect it too).

boot damn time.

I agree with Madhammer. G1 = Closed book.

And maybe my prediction about the fan backlash is off base...maybe there is room in the mind of the fandom for two Cullen Primes. After all, no one associates Chalke's Armadaverse Prime with Primal, do they?

HUNTER AND I SAW THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IN PERSON!

today, at about 3:20 pm, during a special preview thing for a movie called stardust (i think that was the name, hunter will know better) one of the people who was involved in the movie asked "does anyone like transformers?".  a few people went "wooo" but me and hunter were like "OOOH YEAH".

anyway, this guy was also involved on the transformers movie and they had a clip.  this clip was just micheal bay telling us he "wished" he could show us some footage, but he was only able to announce a new cast member.  he was standing in front of a prop he called "an ankle", btw.  it was a giant chunk of metal covered in what looked like ice.

then the screen went blank.

right after that, someone brought thier cell phone up to one of the microphones, and a strangely familiar voice came over the speakers.

after a brief monologue about how their world was destroyed and what not, he said "i am OPTIMUS PRIME!" and at that point, even through the cell phone over the intercom, it was unmistakably peter cullen.

they then announced that peter had, in fact been cast for the movie.

let the fan wank juice flow.

I certainly try not to.

Its Dino Delaurentis (sp) producing both Stardust, Beowulf (guest of honor was Neil Gaimen which is why i insisted in going to this panel), and of course Transformers.

:clap

BTW- Cullen was unmistakeable as Cullen but did NOT sound like the John Wayne - if they go in this direction it will be the perfect homage with out being campy.

Also at the end of his monologue - he said - "...Please join me in our fight for freedom next July fourth now Autobots Transform and roll OUT!"

which yes was a little campy - but OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

fan wood

fan wood

fan wood

:drool

:eek

that made the trip right there worth it.

did i say OMFG?

well its worth it to say again.

Cool. I like Cullen`s voice as Prime. Maybe it`s nostalgia, maybe not. I liked his voice in that it has a deep sublte calmness to it, kind of like Orsen Wells as Unicron. I just hope it held up over time and he doesn`t end up sounding like a drunken Eeyore due to aging.

but anyway, all this did was increase the pressure on the producers like 100000000% to cast Welker as Megatron. u know it's tru

doesn't Megatron only show up near the end of the movie for the final climatic showdown? it doesn't sound like the role will be big enough to warrant casting some one like Welker, who is relatively well known.

Wow, I can't believe Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father!!

SHUT UP.... just because you've been pooin all over what a shame this movie will be to you, doesn't mean you can skip on the netiquette of using spoiler tags...

Sorry but jesus christ some common sense is in order!
