How Transformers will explode

Recommended Posts

Has it occurred to anyone that with the onset of the new movie, that Transformers will explode into something the likes we have never seen before? An even greater popularity than the original series brought. Will it leave us long-timers in the dust or spring us to new levels?

And I bet you can't wait for the new generation of TF knowledge gurus to spring out of the woodwork. Just think about how the Star Wars fan community changed with the onset of the new movies for them...

besides "made them bitter as hell" I don't know what changed

I'm sure that there will be some momentary attention on the TF franchise when the movie comes out, but stuff like this comes and goes as the public's attention drifts to new things. I don't see it becoming what it was in 1984-1986 though.

Two possabilities for the TF francise with the upcoming movie would be:

1)  The movie is popular, well loved and makes a fortune.  Kids go nuts for the toys, parents groan about the toys and other francise, the TF line becomes as popular as it was in the 80s.  So even with bad sequels to the movie and mostly rubbish francise, the line will continue for maybe another ten or twenty years and finally bow out gracefully.

2)  The movie is rubbish, becomes one of the many ignored movies, makes less than it cost to make, the TF line suffers fully, kids continue ignoring it and parents don't even notice.  A year or less later, the TF line disappears for good with a final line or a final toy as a goodbye to the line and it disappears, becoming forgotten ten or twenty years later.

Whatever happens, the TF line will be affected since Hasbro markets it to kids and if the kids don't like it, then it doesn't stand a chance.

you say this like it would be so easy for it to happen

The success of the Transformers wasn't just about the actual toy line or the cartoon; it was also successful because of when it came along. The (enormously lucrative) Star Wars trilogy had just ended, and it left a huge vacuum. Kids were looking for something new to play with. Transformers and GI Joe etc. came along at the right time, when there was a hole in the market that needed to be filled. My point is that it was a unique circumstance; unlikely to be replicated by a brand that's already been around for 22 years by this point.

we will see a lot of new younger fans, but they will not care about the past TF stuff (maybe the armada saga, that's it). It'll be interesting to see what happens.

Two words:  Superman Returns.  By box office standards and most moviegoers' opinions, the film did not live up to the hype and thus did not entirely usher in an even greater popularity to the franchise than the original movies (of course, it will still do well enough to spawn sequels).

For the record, I did enjoy Superman Returns enough to see it twice.

I believe this Transformers movie will fare no better.

Tony.

I'm going to slightly disagree with #2. A movie doesn't have to be good for kids to be excited about it or even like it. Examples are the Hulk and Fantastic Four. Toy sales can ride on hype for a film. I knew kids who were really diggin the Hulk and very excited about it, but the film ended being bad and is considered a flop by studio standards (it didn't make back what it cost). But Hulk toys still sold. Same with fantastic four. Once again I knew kids who were really hyped about the movie and they seemed to love the Thing. Movie was bad.

Sales fell off after the movies released. But sales were good while the hollywood hype machine was still in effect.

The reason I only slightly disagree is that if the movie is bad then sales will plummet. And that could badly effect the franchise.

i disagree with setting polar opposites at all....

I mean - could it be possible that the Film does well but doesnt recreate Reganomics?

is it possible that the movie does not-so-well and Hasbro takes another look at the franchise ala Beast Wars rather then this doomsday of "Goodbye Convoy"

Jeebus - you fanboys get so drama queen about this sometimes...

you say that as though "fanboy" and "drama queen" were two different things
