Buying old G1 when loose joints and other problems

Recommended Posts

After Elrod the Albino's thread on "How many of you are almost done?, US G1". I have been motivated to start collecting G1 now instead of when I'm finished with graduate school and get a real job and have money.

Today, I almost brought a somewhat complete Abominus due to the price ($80 at a comic show). I figured that for that price and since I paid $25 already for entrance fee, I should get it. But on inspection, numerous joints were loose with rust and crap.

In the end, I figure I can get a better and cleaner verison but did end up getting a complete GROTESQUE instead.

Here are the questions:

Question 1: Is there a way to fix/tighten joints?

Besides the obvious tightening joints with screws, what about joints without screws? Any ideas?

Question 2: Any good cleaning solutions out that you would use on your G1 TF? I was thinking about using just rubbing alcohol or something. What about rust removal?

Question 3: Part replacements? Is it worth seaching a good clean TF or just repairing damaged ones?

Question 4: Any other good ideas to for problems that you might  have to deal with?

this is a good thread for me since im into restoring old toys.... but shouldnt it be in kitbash and repaints?

id like to know how to tighten the joints on a few of my toys...such as my laser prime

That's a good point. Would a moderator move this over?

A lot of times, just water, a Q-tip, and elbow grease can clean up a toy. Also, if for some reason you need to remove stickers (to clean an area or my personal favorite, to transfer good stickers on a busted toy to a better body) you need only assault the sticker in question with a hair drier and slowly, slide (NOT peel) it off.

As for joints, I'm not a big fan of using the superglue trick on G1 so I guess you're SOL.

Wow, didn't know about the hair drier trick, thanks?

As for the superglue, never heard of it, but it doesn't sound that useful. What they do, fill the joint with superglue and hope ot causes enough resistances to stay put?

Basically, you put glue in the joint and then keep moving it while it dries. It works better on ball joints but I imagine would work fine on a straight joint. The ones I hate most are the joints that have a rivet. Can't do crap about those. On another note, does anyone have a good way of taking those apart. If so, I would like to try to make molds of some small, rare figures :tftongue

Yeah, I was going to ask this. I also ended up getting a complete Crosshairs with Pinpointer. Pinpointers rivets are so loose. There has to be someone out there who knows how to properly remove and install new rivets in. It shouldn't be that hard? Right?

As long as you have the right tools and the right size of rivets?

Anybody out there with ideas?

:tfhuh

Also, is there a way to tighten those super loose wheels?

I find it quite annoying and fear that I might just slip and the wheels will just pop off.

i know if you check the kitbashing guide for idiots it explains alot of stuff... i go more for nail polish myself than superglue
