The tail could become a gun, ala Pretender (Classic) Grimlock. Either way, it should probably be an accessory.

he already has one gun mounted on his back in dino-mode. it probably detaches to become hand-held in robot-mode. he doesn't need two so the tail probably becomes a sword.

I'm really of the opinion that swords are a bit... ancient for Transformers battles. I mean... Prime with a sword vs. Megatron's arm cannon wouldn't have been such a draw, I'm thinking. Swords are a bit obsolete.

the thing is, would you send any soldier out to fight armed *only* with a gun / guns / rocket launcher / etc? Long-range weapons don't do jack for you when you're in a hand to hand combat situation.
