Custom Scratchbuilt War Within Shockwave

Recommended Posts

My fourth scratchbuilt TF to date, although the other three were pretty pathetic compared to this.  I posted more pics and information here

http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/showthread.php?t=99518

so be sure to check that thread to see more pics and get some more information.  I hate to direct people to another thread, but I posted lots of pics there.

He's 7.5" from the ground to the top of the head and 9.5" from the ground to the top of the backpack.  He is 90% styrene sheets / rods and 10% lego bionicle joints. I used both a thick plastic for the main body and thin plastic for key areas that needed to be flexible such as the tabs that hold the arm cannon ends on the forearm in robot mode. I used ball-joints for all the joints minus the feet and head. The feet and head are on rods that pivot semi-loosely. The body is covered with stickers, which is how I cut out the pieces as accurately as I did. I have considered painting the body black where the pieces meet, but I also kind of like the way the white looks on it. I still haven't made the treads for the back or painted the hands, but those are minor things that can be easily fixed. It has ball-jointed knees, hips, shoulders, and elbows. Other rotating parts are made using rods and tight holes. I can also change the color scheme of him for future builds if anyone wants it in a different color. Last but not least, it takes me over 30 hours to build one, which doesn't include the huge amount of time I spent drawing it on the computer and testing out things to make sure it would all fit together.  The ball-joints came from LEGO Bionicles.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact me either via this thread, a pm using this forum, a message on my yahoo group forum, or at my e-mail address protostar8customs@yahoo.com

I would like anyone interested in purchasing one to contact me using one of the above messages with the exception of posting a message in this thread. I want to keep the business side off the forum and in private at least for now.

Heh.  That's awesome.

nice!!!

It's looks alot like g1 with the wide spread legs and set-down head. But other than that it is really good! :thumb

That looks great but I`ve got a suggestion if you put a double hinge that extends the barrel over the hands and then back over the lowerarms instead of hinged so that it is the way it is now. Or you could put a slide joint in the lowerarms and then just slide the barrel over the hands.

Very cool concept but personally I'd widen the legs, and give him ratchet joints so they can be closer together. :thumb Unless of course your going for a G1 homage. If so don't change a thing. Oh and Rodimus VTS' idea is perfect for the arms. Kills the kibbled open hinges on the arms. :thumb

The way protostar has it is the way Don designed/drew it though.

I actually screwed up the legs when I did them.  If I ever make another for someone I will put the balljoint parts inside the legs so that the legs are close together.  I had considered redoing it on mine, but I ruled against it because the way I did the inside of the legs wouldn't let me.  I had put support layers inside the legs to keep them from caving in or warping and they ended up too close together to wedge the balljoint receptor piece inbetwen them.  I may even put some steel ball bearings in the legs next time to give it more heft.

Again, if anyone wants one, just contact me and I'll give you all the details.  If anyone has any other questions, just let me know and I'll try my best to answer them.
