Do these Pretenders really cost this much

Recommended Posts

I've been scoping out Pretenders for a while now. As for some reason they have really grown on me and there cheap (well except for some reason these). I watched these Pretenders (not big name Pretenders eather) git bid up this high from a 30.00 start point.

Holy crap are they high. Now hears the odd part to me. Last month I got a near mint (same shape as this one) Splashdown complete of Ebay for 32.00 shipped. Also for Christmas my wife bought me near mint complete Finback for 48.00 (which I thought was kinda pricey) shipped off Ebay. In November I watched a MIB complete Groundbreaker not sell at a buy it now price of 85.00. So why are these auctions going up so high. My only guess is there was at lest 2 people with a lot of money to burn who wanted these figures bad enofe to bid them to a insane amount. Earther that or the price of Pretenders is sky rocketing. So what do you all think.

In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that my reaction upon seeing the first auction was an audible snort.

Anyway... could have been a bidding war, they may also be rare? They're in super good condition at least.

Ya there kinda rare but the prices holy crap I would never pay that much for them. Man these prices don't match at all what I've seen (and got) them for in the past. I can't belive how high they went. Well I guess when you want something and have a lot of cash the burn price isn't a thing (this same guy who won these auctions won about 5 other pretender auctions form the same seller).

FYI, the paint for the full size Pretender shells were extremely easy to chip off/wear off - just to see the Pretenders in that condition warrants some price mark up.

Being complete and the figures they are (they were the second wave of G1's series #5, where the second wave of Full Sized Pretenders were in siloheuttes in the early 1989 toy catalogs) and had a small run than the first waves of the same said series.

First G1S5 Full Size Pretender wave includes: Bomb-Burst, Skullgrin, Submarauder, Cloudburst, Landmine, and Waverider.

Second G1S5 Full Size Pretender wave includes: Bugly, Finback, Iguanus, Groundbreaker, Skyhigh, and Splashdown.

I also noticed that the same guy won each of the auctions.  Perhaps he was trying to buy a full collection together, so he payed more.

Second G1S5 Full Size Pretender wave includes: Bugly, Finback, Iguanus, Groundbreaker, Skyhigh, and Splashdown.

..on top of which, those 6 are rarer than the first run of full size 'standard' Pretenders becasuse they were only released in North America.

I have each of those Mint in SEALED boxes I bought them last year for 50.00 a piece.  This is just ridiculous, I sold a couple loose ones not long ago with buy it nows of about 35 dollars and I thought that was high.

Yeah that second wave can be pretty rough. Groundbreaker in particular because he has lots of weird accessories. This set of Pretenders will probably steadily go up in value as the collectors start looking for them because they have everything else.

All things aside, that still is way too much. I'd say...

Finback-55

Sky High-50

Splashdown-60
