I miss old school box art

the only thing i miss is the red and purple squares like the hasbro reissues and the RM skywarp and Thunder cracker sets have

Me too.  Somehow that adds to the appeal of reissues and e-Hobby exclusive sets.  It's funny how we didn't pay attention to these details back in the day (i.e., the box art, the catalog pamphlets, STARS brochures, etc.) but in hindsight, they were sort of an integral part of buying a TF.

I liked those pamphlets- the only way to see the rest of the line before the Intarweb came along.

there is a slight chance i have more than 1 of those STARS brochures laying around if you want one let me know and i can check.

And Blitz mentioned the grid boxes, i went back and looked at a few of my g1s and forgot how cool that made the box and the toy look!

The grid box art was the ultimate. The back art didn't do anything for me.

I miss the complete line catalogues that came with the larger figures. Do they package anything like that in the newer lines?

I miss those mini catalogues. especially on christmas when i opened my new BW figures and saw what else i could spend my future allowance on.

Yeah, them old skool masterpieces were great!  I always have fond memories when I look at the G1 picture.

I think it might be neat to have it again.  But I don't really miss it.

Thanks for the offer, ErikB.  It's ok, though- I'm pretty sure I have a few of them sealed up in a dusty Ziploc bag in a closet somewhere.  I was a bit of a compulsive saver as a kid.

This is making me nostalgic.  I think I'll try to hunt down some of those pamphlets and red decoder strips when I visit my parents for the holidays. :tftongue

My nostalgia goggles always malfunction on 80's box art. It just looks so dated. :)

I didn't really like the back art of the old toys, not even the front art as they didn't even look like their cartoon counterparts.

So, you'd rather be lied to than be shown how the toy actually looks?

I like the G1 and G.I. Joe box/card artwork.  The very fact that they were painted illustrations, as opposed to today's dull comic book drawings, makes me have a lot of respect for the artists.

I think your ALL missing the point except for ErikB.

The back and or front of box art, way back when, was exactly that ART /Artwork.

It was not necessarily a picture of exactly what was included in the box, but rather an artist's depiction of what was possible with what was included, albeit with a healthy dose of imagination.  In todays day and age of sue-happy people, some people may misinterpret advertising of old as "false advertising".

I don't think that's the reason.  All G.I. Joe toys had the "Weapons do not shoot." statement back then.  I've always found that ridiculous, since even as a kid I knew that the weapons didn't really shoot, despite anything in the illustrations.

I think it's just a stylistic change.  All G1 artwork depicted the Transformers as they looked as toys.  Optimus Prime's skinny arms always stick in my mind.
