AFA grading?

Recommended Posts

So you send the toy in and pay for them to grade it? not sure  how it works, can anyone share their experience with me please

I have not done it yet, mostly because like laser eye surgury, I don't trust the mailing away process. If they had local locations you could bring it to, then that would be better.

Second issue with AFA is that their labelling methods are incorrect, often putting the wrong name, or release year on the sticker, and always leaving off the country. Without this information (especially country) their process is worthless to me.

Grading costs depend on the toy's market value, and which type of display you wish to have:

http://www.toygrader.com/gradingcost.cfm

At most, the toy would then be worth their market value + the cost to grade. So for example, let's say you wish to grade a Cybertron Evac. It's value is MSRP, since it is still shipping/in production and easy to find. It's MSRP is approx $8.99 (It is actually less but this is the TRU price.) So let's say you use the "doll" method, which costs $25. The value would then be $33.99.

Eventually, the market will change once the graded toys become more popular, like Sports cards and comic books. Then at that time, price guides will come out for or with info specifically for those items.

However, since not all toys are graded, it is impossible to determine an accurate market value, and can only be determined based on recent sales of that figure at whatever grade it may be at.

Check out the other sections of their site for other info.

I am not sure if there are any competitors, so you should check on that, and if they do exist, check to see if there is a value difference. For example, in the sportscard world there are multiple companies that do grading. And they differ in value even for the same item.

I sent 2 original G1 Primes out to them and for presentation and protective purposes, its well worth it. :)

I was looking into regular glass cases for my Primes and I figured for a bit more, why not just get them graded as well. :) You can always email AFA directly as well with the description of what you need graded and they should be able to give you some help, but like Tripedacus pointed out, their grading chart online is pretty self explanatory to a certain extent.

Just make sure to package your stuff very well and insure it.  I sure cant wait to get more loot to AFA some more stuff. :thumb
