Dyeing transformers

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I'm thinking about entering the wild world of using RiT Dyes for my next kitbash- and I'm looking for links to people who have used the dye method, and their thoughts on it as well as the finished products.

So far the best info I've been shown is here:

http://webpages.charter.net/mpalze/

(thanks CrazySteve if you're reading this!)

anyone have any other websites on the subject I could check out?

thanks

I'm also specifically curious about dying over paints... anyone?

I think it would be one of the wost ways to go.....

now Dyeing over paints...that's tricky....you would need a primer coat because paint will not take the dye

A word of advice: DON'T. Dyes WILL NOT WORK. Dyes are designed to impregnate the fabric of clothing, NOT paint. All you will end up with is a mess. If you're looking for an easy way to change the color of your Transformer, dyeing is not the answer.

I appreciae the warning, but I'm still going to give it a try Jackknife- While RiT dyes are made primarily for fabrics, they will work on plastics.

And I've seen plenty of great kitbashes that take advantage of it... did you have a bad experiance with it by chance?

I've not been to impressed with the end result of dye jobs..... I'd stick to paints

Yeah, I actually had a lot of bad experiences with it. I'm not trying to slam dyes, hellopike, but the way I figure, any project worth doing is worth going the distance. I think what you're looking for is something that won't rub off like paint will. If you believe that dye will work for you, then go with it. I'm only trying to warn you from my kitbashing experience. BTW, ifyou need any tips or advice, go to "the Idiot's Gude to Kitbashing Transformers", in this subforum. That should have enough info to help you out on any projects you have.
