I would imagine they use humans to show perception as far as how transformers are heightwise.  It is hard for kids under 8 to imagine perception so buy drawing in kids in the cartoon will show that the transformers are pretty big for the most part.

When a human kid teaches Transformers how to do the back stroke....

It'd be nice if Megatron kidnapped some of the kids for a few episodes.

Would be an interesting storyline.

 

I mean, the humans are a liability during combat situations.

 

I think it would be an interesting idea if we had evil humans and the sided with the Decepticons for personal gain only to be betrayed in the end.

 

But that has been done in G1 with Shawn Berger.
