"The Transformers" saga is all about opposites. Good Vs Evil, Autobot Vs Decepticon. These opposite powers are on a grand, universe-spanning level. But, there are also more personal opposites to be found within the ranks of both Autobot and Decepticon.

 

Ofcourse, there are both leaders, Optimus Prime and Megatron. Both powerful, and leading man of their respective allegiance. THrough the many years of battle, their fight evolved from an ideological fight to a more personal battle, though their main goal is still defending thier own philosophy.

 

Another pair of opposites are Starscream and Prowl. Both second in command, both respected in their field, but also both considered outsiders by the rest of the group.

 

A third couple of polar opposites, linked together, are Thundercracker and Mirage. Thundercracker is a Decepticon who doubts the Decepticon Cause, and isn't quite sure if he wants to belong on their side. Mirage, however, feels that there is great truth in the Decepticon-philosophy, and that earth should be harvested to aid the Autobots.

 

And last in this line-up, are Soundwave and Grimlock. Both are known to have a very interesting dynamic with their group's leader, and both are in turn leaders of a sub-group within their armies' ranks. Soundwave is very cerebral, very calculative, and holds a tight grip on his Cassetticons. Grimlock is powerful, rashful, and is the only one who can issue soem sense of control over the Dinobots. And, last but not least, both have very interesting speech-impedements.

 

Do you see any other 'polar opposites' within the Autobot and Decepticon ranks? I's love to see what you people would come up with.

The last time the watched TF the movie I Thought it was funny how after the Megs and Prime battle, Prime had some one to run to his aid(Hot shot). Megatron on the other hand was greeted with a swift kick in his abdominal area. Even more, Primes friends stayed with him till his life was completely extinguish. Megs was unceramoneously thrown into space with no one coming to his aid, not even Soundwave. How's that for opposites.

Hot Rod. But yeah, their treatment after their defeats are kind of the opposite...

Another thing I'd call opposites is blatently obvious: the three main recolours of the 'cons are flyers, the three main recolours of the 'bots are ground based. Same for the first set of limb-swappable combiners we get, but reversed: Stunticons are ground based, airialbots are flyers.

Wheelie and a good character are fairly opposite.

I actually went crazy trying to figure this out after TF:TM. Ultra Magnus and Galvatron were both billed as "City Commanders" (at least on the toy boxes), yet Rodimus Prime was Galvatron's oppposite in the show. Surely the toy manufacturers had to know Rodimus' purpose? So would Cyclonus then have been Ultra Magnus' opposite? "The Killing Jar" would seem to support this idea, but I could never shake the fact that UM and Galvy seemed to be more evenly matched, and Roddy's more logical opponent seemed to be Cyclonus. I guess I was always a bigger fan of the toy "story" than the cartoon story with these guys.

Yet another opposite. The good guys hate to take on the responsibilty of being leader and doubt theirselves and always say things like, Im no Prime or Primal. The bad guys are literally killing to be leader. 

Well there is omega supreme vs devestator...Metroplex vs Trypticon...I Always felt Rumbe and Bumblebee had the vibe going personally...and while never really shown in the show...would laugh my ass off if Deadend and Redalert got into a whine off....

Prowl was never well-developed enough as a character for me to see him as anything other than just another 'bot. I'd see Starscream's opposite as Ironhide because they are so completely different. Ironhide is selflessly dedicated to protecting Prime, whereas Starscream... isn't, w/ Megatron.
