This is one that's always confused me so I thought I'd put it to everyone else to see who can come up with the best rationale for it. So the first time we see broadside is in the season 3 episode 'the killing jar', when the Quints camoflage their ship to resemble broadsides jet mode. The big BUT is, he is obviously supposed to be a decepticon in that episode because Cyclonus recognises him as a fellow decep conveying Galvatrons orders. SO, other notable appearances are in 'Grimlocks new brain' and 'The burden hardest to bear', where he is obviously an Autobot resembling his toy robot mode. His only real role in the series is in 'Carnage in C minor' (notable for greivous animation errors, granted) where he is seen to have a different robot mode, resembling that of his comic counterpart. Confused? I am. So, any ideas as to how this could be explained, perhaps by him defecting to the Autobots and having some sort of detachable armour like Jetfire? Over to you...

Notice his size inconsistencies as well.  Being big enough to fight Dev at one point.
