Buy Mudflap, Pass on LeoBreaker...

Recommended Posts

Last weekend, on a toy hunt, I found LeoBreaker. I immediately picked him up for purchase after scouting the area for his in-box partner Mudflap and coming up with nothing.

LeoBreaker looked really cool in the package, and I knew he combined wth Optimus Prime as an arm...and I thought that was really cool.

When I got home, I set to opening him with a friend. I'm usually not much of a Beast person. Having skipped over Beast Wars and Beast Machines...and only returning to the hobby with Armada...I am very much a G1 fan, and a fan of the new Armada/Energon/Cybertron universe...however, through repaints/remolds, I have come to appreciate most of the Beast Wars toys I have seen and love the ones I own.

Upon opening him, and releasing the beast from his metal ties, I found that he is a pretty cool looking lion. More robotic lion, than animal lion...he has a pretty massive appearance, and looks especially fearsome around the head/neck/shoulder area. I popped a set of batteries in him, and with the push of a button on his head, he releases a really badass lion roar. The tail is removeable, and can be attached in two "different" ways...tail up, or tail...down...

The CyberKey gimmick releases claws on his front feet, that really don't look right. They are reminiscent of the claws on Overhaul, however, in beast mode, just seem to be out of place, and even when folded up look out of place.

Transformation is relatively simple. No instructions needed...lion arms become robot arms, lion legs become robot legs, lion head, becomes robot chest, and head comes out.

In robot mode, he is pretty tall...and has a really impressive upper body. I love the lion head as the chest idea. The head has a "pony" tail of sorts giving him that warrior look, and is definitely an upgradedx Overhaul. The arms are big, with tall shoulders, and possibly the most unique arms I have ever seen on a Transformer. His hands even have thumbs...and the same claws from Beast mode, become Wolverine-like claws in robot mode.

His lower body however...suffers in both Beast modeand robot mode. His legs have huge gaping holes straight through them. If you are looking straight at the toy, you have a good 1/2" - 3/4" hole in each leg, which you can look through...which really destroys the overall solidlook of the toy. The legs are really weakly done. This toy deserved more.

The transformation to "arm" mode however is even worse. For this I did pull out the instructions, because I had no idea how the lower arms were supposed to make it down to the legs. Well...stupid me, you have to remove the lower arms. Yes, you actually have to remove the lower arms and attach them to his feet in order to make an arm for Prime. The "arm" if it can be called that is more of a claw. No fingers for Prime to use, and some missing articulation leads to distracting addition to a great Cybertron Prime toy. The arm mode is a joke.

It hurts to return a toy. I am not one to return a toy. But is you are like me...you will save your money for an Alternator or buy Mudflap.

Mudflap is the complete opposite of LeoBreaker. He has a longer Alt mode, but a shorter botmode. He comes with a very satisfying transformation and isn't weighed down by a gimmick that doesn't even look right...

Mudflap is a very cool-looking construction vehicle. Everytime I look at him, I think Hotspot...but he's not Hotspot. His CyberKey gimmick really works with his vehicle mode, and he actually has two gimmicks. One a flip out Energon saw, and the other is a flip out missile launcher. The other two Voyagers released only had one CyberKey port.

The transformation is not what I expected at all from the looks on the box. The transformation is actually sideways...one long side of the vehicle becomes the arms, the other long side becomes the legs. The transformation certainly does not recquire you to open the instruction manual, but it is not overly simple either. Tne best word to describe it, is just satisfying...kind of like how most people felt after transforming Cybertron Red alert...(bascially not what they expected...)

Again in robot mode, I still want to call him Hotspot...

Mudflap does look more like an Autobot than a Decepticon. The face almost evokes G1 Inferno, and the colors...just cry Hotspot!!! If he was a combiner body...it would be so awesome. The is only one small Decepticon symbol, which could easily be removed above the rear cockpit that controls the crane. It really isn't even visible in botmode because its behind his right hand-pad.

The worst things about Mudflap has to be his feet, which are just rectangular pieces of plastic that don't look right, but are necessary for him to stand. Its an interesting transformation for the feet...but a bad looking foot that it creates. He also carries a lot of weight behind each hand. The crane on one and the missile launcher on the other. He has no waist but does have a chest swivel.

If you are confronted with the two of these toys...and can only afford one...I recommend Mudflap!

Yeah, I want Mudflap too. He looks like E Barricade got an upgrade I can't wait to see him in stores I might just order him from Walmart though. Once I get him I won't mind not having a Mega show accurate Starscream. LeoBreaker is ugly to me in bot mode and I know his articulation will annoy the hell out of me. I think I'll just wait for Sonic Bomber or what ever his name will be. Overhaul's arms are the most annoying arms since G1. Amazingly I still managed to get a kick ass pose out of him. Looking at Remy's pic of Leobreaker, I don't think it's posable with him. If Remy can't do it then it's all but imposible.

on leobraker/ligerjack i have to agree his arm mode is pure WTF if he had fingers like in the show it would be x1000 better but i do like him in bot and beast mode

mudflap/demolisher i again agree and the autobot like looks are explained in the show cuz well he was a bot at 1 point

i bought ligerjack/leobreaker coz of galaxy convoy/optimus prime since they could combine but he turned out to be a less powerful looking transformer than i had expected.i have to admit i do like the robot mode heels dat become the "thumbs" of liger convoy or watever his name is in transformers cybertron.if he werent a combiner of prime'i dont think i woulg have bought him.

right now i am looking for a mudflap/demolisher.my cousin had him and i have tried him out.his crane dat becomes the sword after you insert the key is as big as unicron!!!!!!he is an awesome figure and somehow looks like backgild to me.i cant wait to get him.

I'm one of the people that really rather likes Liger Jack, especially as his characterisation on the show has been so good. However, I do feel that the combined mode would have been a thousand times better if it had been a little more 'show accurate' (toy came first, I know...) and allowed the legs to join together, giving Liger Convoy one solid arm rather than two.

Still a great toy, though. And I've got a Dark Liger swinging my way courtesy of Ebay - he's gonna look great combined with Master Galvatron!

on leobraker/ligerjack i have to agree his arm mode is pure WTF if he had fingers like in the show it would be x1000 better but i do like him in bot and beast mode

:pfx

Someone needs to fingerbash him bigtime.

what size class is leobreaker?

Mega, Voyager, $19.99

wow!  I thought he'd be a deluxe!  that's some upgrade!
