Micromaster Hot Rod repaints *update*

Recommended Posts

Well, over the last year or so I've picked up a few Micromaster Hot Rod KO's off ebay, but they always came in completely garish colors.  So I've always wanted to repaint 'em, but I'm absolutely horrible with paint.  Reading someone else's post they mentioned that they had used permanent markers to touch things up, and yesterday being stranded at home, and having one of the KO's successfully dismantled, I decided to give it a go, and overall I'm very pleased with the results considering this was all done with Sharpie permanent markers :thumb

Here's what I had to start with:

And here's what I ended up with, using a red sharpie & silver sharpie, and regluing some labels back on (I tried the blue for the windows, but it didn't turn out well, so I went back to the silver)

And here's some comparison shots with the original Hot Rod Micromaster, and another KO that I did the same thing on that didn't turn out quite as well 'cus the glue bled through the labels....

For the last one I'm probably going to use a gold sharpie instead of the stickers, since I don't have any stickers left from the KO's....

Edit: oh yeah, I also have two other KO's that are primarily blue with the magenta face... one's at work and the other got destroyed trying to take the pin out of the waist :tfsad

Your version makes the original look bad. It has to be said.

Well done.  :thumb

Update: (sorry, no pic)

I finished repainting the last magenta one today, and remembered that I had a gold marker that I got with the silver, tried that on the spoiler, and it looked fantastic, so I went back and attempted to peel the spoiler stickers off the other two, but that met with limited success since I had used superglue :redface (all I had).  But I was able to get most of it off, went over the others with the gold marker, and they also look great :thumb

I'm gonna have to buy even more of these little buggers :P

That looks brilliant!

Two questions:

Who/where on ebay did you get these from?

and

Does the marker rub off on your hands or does it dry normally, like paint?

The Silver & Gold can chip after it's dried if you're not careful, the red is all permanent marker, so once it dries it should be solid, I've only noted I could remove it with my fingernail within a few minutes after applying, after that seems to be perfect.  Tho any liquids could have a removal effect, i don't know.  But after painting 3 of 'em and transforming 'em repeatedly, I haven't noticed any other wear besides the red & gold chipping.

As for ebay you just gotta look around

Oh, and just for anyone who wants to repaint any blue KO's using the marker method.... the blue does not paint well.... it's very dark if you use the red marker, and if you use the silver as a base and then go over that with the red, it looks nice & metallic like on the blue heads of the magenta ones... but trying it on the rest of the body didn't turn out, so you might want to use real paints instead....

Ok, finally took some new pictures of the last one I repainted today, and this one I think turned out the best so far.  I actually swapped chests with the one that had the bled through label, and with an orange, gold, & black sharpies, I touched up the label to make it look good again :thumb

And, as an added bonus, here's a shot of most of the Rodimi at my house :tfgrin
