Blowdryer and plastic

Recommended Posts

This is not about kitbashing, per se but I suppose you 'bashers have had to shape plastic with heat, so I thought I could ask your expertise in my matter.

I've got Energon Windrazor which has those weapon/foot/hand accessories. One of the connecting clips in one part is loose so that it won't hold the other part tightly.  Now I know that by heating the plastic momentarily with i.e. a blowdryer it can be shaped.  I also know that heating the plastic too long causes it to warp shapeless.  So what would you consider a safe time and temperature that does the job but doesn't cause any irreversible.

Thanks in advance!

Ask the people at the idiots guide to kitbashing. At the top of the forum.

That would depend upon plastic type, what kind of hairdryer you have, and so forth. Generally, if you warm the plastic to where it melts, then you've warmed it WAY too long! I would experiment a bit by warming it a few seconds at a time, then seeing if you can move it. Or better yet, try it on on a piece of plastic similar to it. But keep in mind:while you can always add more heat, cooling down a part that is about to melt is way more difficult. use caution in this endeavor, and I wish you luck.
