does the matrix no longer

Heres my take on the Matrix

The Matrix of leadership is just a connection to the Matrix Zone(just like Vecter Sigma and the Pit). the Allspark(Primus) resides in the Matrix Zone. The Matrix of Leadership can creat life by summoning sparks(fragments of Primus) from the Matrix zone. It can defeat Unicron by Summoning Primus. Sparks go back to the Matrix zone when they die.

In G1-BWR The Matrix of Leadership was used to defeat Unicron, cure the Hateplage, Upgrade Hero Convoy to Battle Convoy, defeat Majin Zarak, defeat Unicron again in BWNeo, Summon the Matrix Blade and as a Spark for Primal Prime. The Matrix has the ability to pass on the Transformer Race colective knowlage.

The Matrix was used up in TROP but recharged by Alpha Trion's spark in Headmasters. Rodimus Convoy took the Matrix with him to rebuild Siebertron. In it's absence the Cybertrons used the Zone Energy(created by the Big Bang) instead. Sometime during the Pax Cybertronia the Matrix was shattered and Givin to Numoruos Highranking Maximal Captians(and some Predacon Captions such as Galvatron.). after BWNeo Unicron massacured the Convoy Concel the Matrix shards grew more powerful.

In the newer series The Matrix was used to Revieve Convoy, create Ultra Magnas, as a storage for the Spark of Combination, to summon the Matrix gun, to open up Wormholes in conjecture with Vecter Prime's sword, and to help Galaxy Convoy combine with Ligerjack.

I'm glad that Beast Machines finally aired in Japan so Xbob can refer to it by its Japanese name. :tflaugh

The funny thing is that the matrix was just a deus ex machina plot device created for TF:TM just like Unicron was created for the movie as "the ultimate super evil villain!!" etc. And now look what it's become.

BW Ravage.

Plot Device.

:eek

in the G1 movie, the matrix was used for a few things:

1) a means of deciding who would become the next prime.

2) a way to defeat unicron.

3) a means of up-grading Hot Rod to Rodimus Prime.

the matrix in the new continuity has never been used for any of these things except in armada when prime gave it to hot shot but that was more of a "I'm going to sacrifce myself to save Earth. Here, hold onto this until I'm reborn" sort of deal. A-Hot Shot didn't even get a new body.

if never again will prime pass the matrix onto anyone else so that they can be up-graded into the new leader, then maybe it's time to let that G1 cliche die.

The matrix was referred alot in BW, but more like heaven & hell, you don't have proof, yet you beleive it's there, atleast until Rhinox saved Primal again.  It was also visited in BM too.

It G2, Rodimus used to to save all of the Transformers, though he would sometimes revert back to Hot Rod when he gave it back to Prime.  I would like that one explained too!  :wtf

If you are regarding why Optimus Prime didn't revert back to... whatever.

It comes down to, did Orion Pax turn into Optimus Prime because of the Matrix or just because Alpha Trion rebuilt him? Did Optimus Prime even have the Matrix at that point?

Well based on the Hot Rod issue, my only idea is that since Optimus Prime had carried the Matrix for so long, perhaps his body was more adjusted to it. Hence Hot Rod would change back because he only seemed to keep it for like a year at a time before losing it/giving it to someone.

No, Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime.  In 1 sceen, Rodimus gives back the matrix & instantly becomes HR again.  In the next sceen, he's Rodimus gain (another TF error).  But in the Hate Plague (IIRC) Prime got the Matrix, yet Rodimus stayed in his Prime shape, he didn't revert back to HR.

the matrix is on hiatis, it will be back from vacation in a few months

he did actually. Chalk that up to animation error as well. In the final scene you see him as Hot Rod in all his fuschia glory. Not to mention "Rebirth".

I find it very hard to tell Rodimus from Hot Rod in robot mode. If drawn poorly its easy to mix them up. Infact to my eyes Rodimus is just a fat Hot Rod with a slightly gruffer voice and a trailer(which can magicly appear/disappear at will-as is the secret power of the G1 Primes!)

The thing that bugged me about his transformation is that 98% of the time, they just morphed his trailer into his legs or something. But there were animation inconsistencies with Rodimus Prime even in TF:TM. Here's what Rodimus Prime should look like as compared to Hot Rod:

As if the season 3 animators ever followed the movie models...

So we've established that the Matrix is the collective knowledge of every last Autobot that ever died, it contains their "sparks" (or laser cores, if you prefer), and it can destroy big bads like Unicron.

I think the Matrix really now only serves as a token of leadership. Seriously. Its only real purpose seems to be to let others know Prime is the leader (as if the fact that he's tall, has a self-contained enhanced mode, and is ranked at 10 in his tech specs weren't enough). Basically, it's just a token item that's just there, now. Though hey, at least GF Prime's Matrix compartment opens up in Geewun-style...well, anyway. That's my two cents.
