paypal and ebay fees are a killer

i mean if you pay by money order it cost a buck or 2 to buy and internationl mo's 2x as much

so i set up 2 paypal accounts

for bal transfers and one for credit cards

i let people know bank / e-checks (when they clear) or bal trasnfers are free

but credit cards cost and then i ask if they will meet me 1/2 way on the charges and i have yet to meet someone to so no

one guy even suggested to transfer money from credit card to bank then to paypal to do balance transfer or e-check via paypal , it worked out ...

execption always one in the bunch.....

1 person who tried to make an outside offer and when i declined he told ebay i was charging him for paypal, ebay suspended my auction but refunded my fees because it was not on my auction, then i reported him and sent a copy of his email to ebay and he is no longer a registerd loser i mean,  user.............

wow, what a loser.

ok. i see everyones arguement.

and Tri' I know it's illegal on ebay, but this is the forums...

If the buyer wants the convenience of paying with a credit card through pp, yes they should pay for it. Why do you think vendors, stores and restaurants typically say there is a minimium order/amount  before they will accept credit cards? Accepting cc payments cost them money, just like sellers on evilbay. If anyone does not want to pay the fees then don't pay using a cc through pp, use your bank account if you have one. Otherwise do not bid on the fracking auction.

As for the illegal aspect of this,  I just spoke with a pp rep yesterday and they informed me so long as it is a)not written in the auction and b)the sender of the funds agrees, it is acceptable. Basically, don't Starscream about it and "it" is fine.

Even if the seller doesn't disclose adding the fees in their terms, if you are a pp user and you intend to use it to pay for an auction, YOU SHOULD ASK BEFORE bidding whether or not they add on the fees.

Oh and some sellers do add in the evilbay fees, you got to do your due diligence and ask.

Lastly, as others have mentioned the seller can still round up the shipping and add in the pp fees, so really... the problem is this, ASK beforehand or RISK paying fees you don't want to. The ONUS is on you the buyer not the seller. Caveat emptor.

It up to the seller. As little as it is I'm not making my buyer do it. With the cost of gas right now and the time waiting at the bank to cash or deposit the money order or the check. I think it worth that dollar or 2 that they take.

hmm... all good arguments.

this topic can be released and close now kthx.

I'll eat the fee on auctions I sell, but if I pick up a figure for someone to sell to them at cost plus shipping, I factor it into the cost. I'm helping them out by getting the figure for them, why should I lose money ( any amount, regardless of how little )?

My thoughts are:

Make it clear what you are charging.

If you want to cover paypal fees then state it. if you dont state it then you can't.

Personnally I don't live very close to a bank - if someone paid me by cheque i would have to drive to the bank - can i pass on the (admittedly small) cost of petrol to them?

just a thought...

Paypal is nothing, paying threw Bidpay and as a buyer you have to pay a fee no matter what!  WTF is that crap about?

  • 2 weeks later...

no, and i never will. I think i did a few times in the past but its annoying. I just don't care enough for such little cash. I don't like it when people ask me to add in the fees after the deal is done. Its very rude.

PayPal is a cost of doing business...that should be incurred by the seller.  You don't see 9.99 + Tax + Credit Card Machine Rental Charges at any "real life" store.  That cost is hidden in the price of the item, naturally.  Its a mental thing tho...if I see Galvatron for $10 + shipping and PayPal fees...or one for $12 plus shipping....I'll get the $12 cuz it pisses me off that I can visibly see a seller charging me for THEIR cost of business.  It's cheap and lame.

It depends really.

If I'm selling stuff on eBay, I set the starting price at:

Price I payed for item + Listing fees cost + Final price fee (if it sells for the starting price) + 4% PayPal costs.

It sounds like alot, but I only put stuff on eBay that I get for really cheap so I don't make any profit at all if it sells for the starting price. On the other hand, I don't lose money either.

This means the starting price still ends up lower than all the "scalpers" on eBay and if I make any money, it's a nice bonus.

I don't jack-up the prices on items just because they're rare or hard to find, that's up to the bidders.

As for selling stuff on here, I would add PayPal charges. This is because I would sell the stuff for:

Price I payed for item + Postage to get item to them + 4% (but ONLY if they want to use PayPal.)

I wouldn't want to make a profit by selling anything to a fellow fan. However, I wouldn't take a hit in my own pocket if they payed through PayPal.

At the end of the day it's up to the seller to make the choice, but also to inform the buyer. Slapping PayPal charge on top of a done deal isn't on, but if the buyer is made aware prior to agreeing to the deal they shouldn't Starscream about it.
