Removing Paint

Recommended Posts

I bought a bootleg PM Prime a while back that someone had tried to paint. I'm going to turn him into a Nucleon Quest Prime, but first I need to remove thier paint job. What can I use that won't melt the plastic? Is there anything I can soak it in? Has anyone else had to completely remove a botched paint job before?

I have used nail polish remover.  That has worked well for me.  Hope that helps!

Nail polish remover, depending on contents (acetone based one for example), will melt or cause damage to plastic, use pine-sol, the one you find in markets, let the pieces stand overnight and then brush the flaked old paint with an old toothbrush, for harder spots try using testors airbrush cleaner its a paint solvent that won´t harm plastic :)

The nail polish I use is the unscented kind (basically the cheapest too) and I use Q-tips (i.e. I don't put the whole bot in a bowl and soak it.  Carefully applied it has worked so far.  Pine Sol didn't work for me as well . . .

Thanks, I'll try both.

I scrubbed one of the guns yesterday and painted over top with Kryon, just to see what might happen, and it took fine. So, I might not have to. But, I don't really like the idea of painting over what's allready there.

The paint that they used seems oily. Do I need to add anything, water, to the Pinesol, or just it?

Thanks again, N

use the pine-sol pure, just one thing, pinesol will melt soft window plastic, like g1 cars roof so use it just for the solid colors plastic and wash the pieces completely before re-painting with lots of water to eliminate any residues good work!!

So... uhm... would these techniques also work on the paint used to put all those advertisements onto Alternator Smokescreen? I like the whole blue look of the character but just loathe the "added touch ups." It's either try to remove the damned things or just paint him completely black. Then again, that wouldn't be that bad either. :schin

Anyways, looking forward to a decent answer. Thanks! :thumb
