BW, The other, yes the other heads!

Recommended Posts

I was looking at my Beast Wars toys the other day, and I thought "whats with the mutant heads?" (perhapes somthing to do with the maximal and preadacon identity) What do you think?

The mutant heads were designed to be for a sort of "in between" or "berzerker" mode in Hasbro's mind.

Mainframe didn't pick up on the idea because it would've required modeling another face for each character, something that would take much time and money.

When the beast wars series was still in its developing stage, the designers for the show thought it would be a good idea to give the robots mutant heads that they could use in battle. It was supposed to show the merging of transformer and beast, but the concept was dropped before the show got into production. Problem with that was the toys were already in their final design stages and the heads had already been incorporated into the mold.

This was also true of some of the transmetal 2 beasts that were released. Tigerhawk, TM2 Primal, TM2 Megatron all had a seperate cockpit that had a little chair inside it. THis was to show where the VOK would ride, the ones that combined Tigatron and Airrazor. But alas that idea was never incorporated into the show either.

And it wouldn't really fit in the plot I guess.

Atleast for the Maximals.

I reeeeeeally don't think so. If I recall what the Hasbro execs said at Botcon correctly, it was their idea to do the mutant heads. Mainframe wasn't crazy about the idea.

An idea Mainframe did have, however, was to give Optimus and Megatron three modes that would represent their Ultra and Basic toys.

Actually, those were supposed to be "spark figures" of some sort (possibly the Vok in Tigerhawk before he was purged). Optimal Optimus wasn't designed with the sparkm figure idea in mind at all.

Defunct your right, because the basic sized Optimus and Megatron were supposed to be incorporated third modes for the figures. Hence the homige to the basic Bat sized Primal with his two blue swords that resemble Bat Primes Wing swords.

Tigerhawk was set up for the VOK, but you are correct about the others and the spark figures. I had forgotten about those.
