Has Don ever seid anything about the Decepticons Motives in the film, I would greatly apreasiate it if someone suggested to Don that Blacker than Black Villens arn't nearly as interesting as Villens that are trying to do something noble, Like Magneto.

I agree with you about this. Magneto was a great character because he wasn't a "mwahaha" evil guy. (Is *anyone* actually like that in real life?) I could say the same thing about BM Megatron but I don't want to completely derail this thread.

Oh wait I forgot – Vanguard's banned. Nevermind. :thumb

BM Megatron was also great b/c his POV actually made sense on one level. Sure he was a megalomaniac, but his beliefs about what it means for Cybertron to be mechanical weren't *wrong*. He just twisted the truth, rather than attacking it.

So that would be cool to see in the movie.

I think what alot of us are going to have to do is just walk away and pretend this movie and perhaps even the rest of the fandom don't even exist.  What's a little disturbing, to me at least, is how frequently that looks like a viable alternative to arguing with some of the more active internet groups.  More than a little indicative of the political climate here over the past decade or so but that's a tangent for another time.

The buzz surrounding this movie just has me at a loss for words.  Simply put, it's readily apparent that nobody knows anything at all.  Yet for the last year there has been non-stop commenting on every little facet of the production which will likely continue well into 2006.  Regardless of what I think of Don Murphy and his associates, it's like watching paint dry between drug commercials: boring and uninformative.  Needless to say, I rarely post about the movie and never on those forums.

Back to what I was getting at earlier, there's just not much of a personal stake in it anymore.  I haven't enjoyed the last four shows at all and Galaxy Force is going to make five.  The only comic I was reading got sunk by an incompetent superstar publisher.  Then US reissues stopped and it's a real struggle to find Alternators or keep up with Binaltech.  Perhaps it's the sheer expanse of this collection...might be time to hop off the wagon and enjoy what I've got for awhile?

People rotating into the fandom just don't care about G1 or their fellow fans that do.  I suspect they don't care about much at all really, even though that's venturing into real fan definitions.  Some of the comments on boards like this just make me shake my head.  I can't decide if you want change because it's your idol to worship or because it gets others so riled up.

Case in point, Optimus Prime's faceplate.  There's no reason to change it, ever.  Unless you get some perverse glee out ruining stuff for other people just because you can of course.  It's fairly hypocritical to expend energy on what amounts to a minor detail even in your own argument.  Leave it alone and do something that really is creative, meaningful, and, God forbid, something we can all accept?

It's irritating to have to view people that should be fellow fans as usurpers trying to change what I like into something totally different that they'd like.  If you hate it so bad, go find something else?

Anyone who says G1 as is has nothing left to tell needs to rediscover something called an imagination.  Dreamwave and Ichikawa did, the rest of us can at least try.  No arbitrary change, from anime stereotypes to transgenerational characters, will amount to a hill of beans otherwise.  I'd like something more from the film than computer generated explosions and the brand name if at all possible.

Off on a tangent here...would it kill some studio to spend $10 million on a really focused animated movie as opposed to watering the mythos down to the point where it recoups a $500 million budget?  The one-size-fits-all approach to entertainment is starting to get really frustrating.

The point is, the movie's not worth worrying very much about right now.  If it actually gets made and is done properly as well, that's great.  If it bombs, for any number of reasons, that's too bad.  Either way it's just a movie in the long run.  Worst case scenario, fandom splits and two groups of fans stop interacting with each other for a bit.  I'd prefer something like that to this constant back and forth (with all it's implications) we've been engaged in for a couple years now :/

Does no one ever listen to anything that's said? How many more panicked "Don Murphy's trying to change Optimus's face plate! Oh noes!" am I gonna have to read around the net? It's quite sad when no one reads what's actually said and goes off on one.

I have a simple filter for dealing with people on DM.net, here and on other websites.

If anyone uses the phrase "the fans all want..." or variations off it, I disregard anything they say. I don't care about anyone that cares to play spokesman for everyone in the fandom, when it's pretty clear everyone has their own views and there's no mysterious entitity called "the fans".

Also, anyone that uses "you people" to describe everyone else on a board can be easily disregarded as well. No one is a lone voice in the wilderness fighting against "you people".

Also, anyone that says "they should..." as preface to a request that is wholly unrealistic.

I think what alot of us are going to have to do is just walk away and pretend this movie and perhaps even the rest of the fandom don't even exist.

This is an extremely glum and sad view of things. Even if it has some truth behind aspects of it.

TF's have to change as a property. It can't stay the same all the time or it would completely flop (but even now we've hit a wall where it's just a lot of seemingly re-hashed ideas and overused plotlines, *shrugs*). This movie will give it's nod to us fans and may even have more than that for us to appreciate.

I love G1, but I don't want this movie to be a complete G1 Re-Hash. That is very pointless to do. This movie needs the new as well as elements of the old. I'm sorry you feel like people are usurping the fandom with their views but this is a franchise property that that have multiple views and opinions.

No doubt. I've seen enough "hip nostalgia films" to last me a lifetime. Do something interesting with this movie, Dreamworks.

Has Don ever seid anything about the Decepticons Motives in the film, I would greatly apreasiate it if someone suggested to Don that Blacker than Black Villens arn't nearly as interesting as Villens that are trying to do something noble, Like Magneto.

the general movie audience wants blacker-than-black villians because it makes things more clear-cut and simplified. they want a definite hero to cheer for and a definite villian to boo, even more so now that america is so strongly divided by politcal issues.

But will it hold up next year? Political climate notwithstanding, I think it would be a total bust if Megatron was a tyrant for no other reason than just because he could be. Make him complex, like he believes in leibensraum or something, and you'll have a better villain than most.

I think that's a huge (and inaccurate) generalization. If anything, the trend has been away from Snidely Whiplash-type villains in recent decades....

(except for kids' cartoons of course :P)
