Dyeing Parts in Unheated Dye?

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to color dye a plastic part by leaving it immersed in the dye without heating it and then wait overnight or a certain amount of time for the color to set in? :wtf

If so, do I need to add something extra to the dye for this to work? :wtf

I have tried this. It doesn't work as well. You still need to add the acetone (nail polish remover)but even with that it still doesn't suck it in as much if at all. I even tried it leaving it outside on a hot sunny day and while it did Take the dye a little better it still wasn't the same effect as that of one being "boiled"

Heat definitely helps; doesn't need to be quite boiling (though close).

Keep parts moving (much as possible) & OFF the direct heat (bottom of pan, etc)

I've had great AND melt-tastic results with this method. Test on cheap stuff first :redface
