Fixes for TF Animated figures

Wow, I just saw 14 pages of problems with the Animated figures! Now I agree that they should come without problems right out of the box but sometimes there's things that need to be worked out with a new series.

First, if you have a complaint, contact Hasbro with this form: http://hasbro.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/hasbro....25sJnBfcGFnZT0x

I get a response from them every time and have talked to them about subjects from loose joints to unpaintable plastic on their figures. This is how they get feedback from us, we have to do out part in telling them what's wrong. The form is easy to fill out and will only take you a few minutes.

But since you've already bought your figures it's time to fix the ones you have. Some pictures are supplied below the fixes for you as well. These are the fixes that worked with my figures.

Loose Ball Joints

In the case of Grimlock, Prime, megatron, prowl, etc they all have balljointed sections. These are easy to fix. First pop the offending limb off. Take your superglue and drip just a little but on the ball-post, not inside the cup. Spread it around a bit and do NOT put it back in. Let the superglue cure by sitting there or hit it with a hairdryer until it forms a nice, shiny, hard shell. Reattach it. This fixed my Grimlock, 2-pack Prime and Megatron's hips, and Prowl's shoulders. Depending on how loose the ball-joint is it may take a few coats.

This fix should work for almost any figure unless the ball post is made of the dreaded unpaintable/unglueable plastic. Then you option is to drip the superglue on the ball post and snap it back into place while it's still wet! Since the ball post is made of the special plastic the superglue will only adhere to the ball-cup making for a tighter fit. Just gently move the limb loose after it cures. But make sure the ball-post is made of the unpaintable plastic, not clear plastic like 2-pack's Megatron's hip. Black Arachnia's mandibles are a good example of what unpaintable plastic is. It's also the kind that's used for the inner disc of a Marvel Legends shoulder or hip joint. Kinda waxy and tough plastic.

Loose swivel/cut-joints

These can be a little more difficult. Starscream has them in his thighs, so does Voyager megatron. They like to pop out because the ratchet system on the hip (not the character, the clicking noise, heh) is stronger than the cut joint-plug below it. The fix can be done two ways, sometimes one works and other times the next works. Fix 1 is to do the superglue trick as described in the tightening ball-joints. Take the cut joint apart and apply a thin layer of superglue to the end of the peg where the ridge is. Usually this is towards the top of the peg or around it. Let the superglue cure then pop it back into place. This usually tightens the joint up enough so it doesn’t pop out.

If this doesn’t work or the sections are made of Unpaintable plastic, then you’ll have to do the Burning-Blade technique. Sounds dangerous eh? It can be, just be careful. What you want to do is heat up the end of your x-acto knife with a lighter or use a soldering Iron and touch the end of the peg, melting it slightly and making it wider. Some people cut an ‘X’ into the top with the heated blade, thus flaring it out some that way. I had to do this with Starscream’s right leg because it kept falling off.

The last-ditch effort is to drill a hole in both ends then drive a screw into one end. Clip the head of the screw off and then ‘screw on’ the opposite part until they become one piece. Unless you turn the part more than 360 deg, it will stay together that way.

Crappy Paint

Ah, you’ll have to touch up your figures by hand to combat this problem. I recommend Testors Model Master Acrylics. I use the Fantasy line and their regular Acrylic line. Head to their site and click on the Model Masters banner to be taken to this page: http://testors.com/brand_category.asp?brandNbr=4 There you can view the Color Charts and see what shades you need to match. Depending on your monitor colors you may need to adjust the shade of paint when you get it so I buy some white, black, gray, and a few other colors to mix with my paints to obtain different shades. Like for Grimlock’s gray I had to use Gunship Gray mixed with some Bear Brown to get that shade. His red needed Dragon Red lightened slightly with some white, or Rust mixed with some Bloode Red.

Loose hinge Joints

This requires a bit more finesse. Most of the voyager figures have clicky hinge joints in their knees, elbows, shoulders, etc. But then there’s the case of just a regular hinge without the clicky. Sometimes those are loose and you’ll need a superglue trick to fix them. Drip a very small amount of superglue in the hinge and wait 5 seconds, then move it. Wait a little longer, move it slightly again. Keep messing with it so it doesn’t completely set up but slowly starts getting tighter. After about 2-3 minutes the joint will be much tighter. Repeat as needed. Works great on Marvel legends figs!

Grimlock’s slide-in arm fix

Welcome to the advanced class as this fix takes a few more steps. First pop off Grimmys leg and unscrew all three screws. You’ll have to pop the thigh apart with a tad bit of effort because there’s still a peg or two holding it together.

Once you have the leg apart, look at the end of the black arm section. There’s two spinny sections. Those sections slide in the thigh groove. Take your hobby knife and carefully shave the back of the spinny black things into a slant leaving the front to remain flat so it will stop the arm from coming out.

Next take your Dremel tool or something you can scrape plastic out with and shave inside the groove that’s in the thigh. Remember how his thigh bulged out when you pressed the leg in? We’re shaving the inner sides to give that black piece of plastic more room. I suspect you could skip this step and just shave the black spinner sections thinner overall but I didn’t want to risk the arm being pulled out because there was too much clearance.

Now test fit it together. Grimlock’s arm now moves all the way in!

Ok, hope that helped with a lot of the fixes. Remember this is just a guide and your results may vary depending on your tools and skill level. These worked for my figures and now everything stays tight and together on my figures. More fixes to come as I figure them out. Know of a problem that wasn’t listed? Email me at jinsaotome@hotmail.com, I’ll pick up the figure and post a fix when I have time. Thanks for reading!

**UPDATE**

Here’s the fixes for the range of motion on Prowl’s knees, Lockdown’s hands, and Bumblebee’s stingers. Props to the people who came up with any of these fixes first! I believe Prowl’s knee fix was posted somewhere here so I’m basically just adding pictures.

Lockdown’s Hands

Poor Lockdown has funky wrists, his hands don’t fold out all the way. Snag your Dremel tool or Hobby Knife and cut a square out of the bottom portion of his hand as shown in the pic. If you just have a hobby knife you’ll need to score at it over and over until you can dig it out. I used the tip of a mini-screwdriver to help. Do it right and his hand will gain full-fold-out range

Bumblebee’s Stingers

They don’t fold in all the way and look funny sticking out when he’s in robot mode. Fix this by folding the Stingers out and using your Dremel tool or hobby knife to remove the two square bits of plastic behind the post that the stingers hinge on. With those out of the way his Stingers fold all the way in when his hands are folded out.

TFfixes_005.jpg

Prowl’s knee range of motion

This is an easy fix, all you have to do is trim the bottom of the hip-pad at an angle. This allows the sides of his knees to clear the pad and get a good 90 degree angle.

Voyager Megatron's Cannon

Meg's arm cannon is kinda 'floating' there on a hinge when you get him. You can make the cannon fold flat against his arm by carving a chunk out of the support bar that gets in the way. Tho the cannon will still be laying on its side, it looks better and doesn't throw him off-balance as bad.

Is Hasbro really concerned with plastic parts hobbyists can't paint on their toys?

I just more or less mutilated my Animated Ratchet to get the damn EMP generator to finally stay in there. Part of the problem was the peg in his arm that sticks up to release the barrels (not that one can't do that by pressing the button themself). So I took a file and gently filed it down to a decent level so it's not intrusive, but it completely destroys the intended function (which I really don't give two hoots since I mentioned an alternative to the generator barrel release above). So now he can wield it like a medical pro.

What Lockdown fix?

I'd be interested to see a fix for that. Part of the obstruction that blocks his hands from coming fully out houses the hinge that the hand rests on.

You just have to shave away a bit of the grey plastic on his hands near the hinge with an X-acto knife. I did it on mine without too much trouble.

The thing is, it would've been trivially easy for Hasbro to mold his hands in the right shape to work properly out of the box, but I guess they couldn't be bothered.

Translation: "I don't think Hasbro cares about 'customizers' as any sort of consumer base."

That's what you meant to say right? Considering there's thousands upon thousands of customizers on message boards and each of them can go out and buy additional figures, Hasbro should take that into account. Collectors usually don't keep buying duplicates of the same figures. Maybe a Starscream to open and one to keep MIB, but each of those customizers may go out and buy 3-5 of those figures to customize. What if Hasbro made GI Joes out of unpaintable plastic and said ok, we're holding a custom contest like they recently did. You'd have next to 0 turnout, nobody would be able to sculpt, glue, or paint anything on them.

Thanks Jin!

Please post the Lockdown fix as well.

Done!

I've learned that a thousand miles of ocean between you and the people who make your product makes a biiiiiig difference. It's not always Hasbro's fault. Like Bumblebee's stingers, there's definatly a notch where the tip folds down into. But for some reason those pieces of plastic were added or left in so that the stingers didn't fold all the way down. We don't know if the Hasbro designers forgot about them or it got changed in China.

    • Just in from the Asia SNS we have the first in-hand images of the Takara Tomy Transformers Missing Link C-01 Convoy (Optimus Prime) release. Get a quick look at this classic figure update in robot mode and with views of the packaging. This figure should be shipping to the USA in March 2024. • Preemptive comment: Leader SS86 Galvatron.  I don't know what to say about this. I'm not 100% happy with Kingdom Galvatron and I love Galvatron so I'm down for another take. Assuming it's a brand new take that is. Leader SS86 Megatron. A few months ago after the last major set of leaks I gave up on something like this. I just kind of thought that Siege Megatron was the best we were going to get. Earthrise Megatron still sucks though. I got a bunch of upgrade kits for all my Siege base mold Megatrons, got the BPF OSKO Siege Megatron and just got in a Takara Legends Megatron with the DX9 upgrade kit just to try and calm my Megatron urge. So these two, the also rumored SS86 Optimus and SS86 Ultra Magnus all beg a question. That being are these all going to be a new scale or are they going to stick to the current scale. I mean, SS86 Ultra Magnus isn't in scale but I don't mind that as he should be super mode sized as he's combining with his trailer. What I did mind though was that Kingdom Galvatron was also out of scale. Which is what prompted me to get some of those upgrade kits for my Megatrons and the OSKO in the first place. So are these three "new" figures going to be in scale with Kingdom rodimus Prime and the rest of current Generations or are they going to scale to the out of scale SS86 Magnus making them around the height of Kingdom Galvatron anyway. I would imagine that this doesn't bother people that much and normally it wouldn't bother me either but Megatron, Galvatron, Optimus and Rodimus are supposed to be the same size and I just can't get away from that in my head. So having one bigger than the others is really bugging me but this can be fixed by a new, shorter, Galvatron mold. I don't want another leader Galvatron the same size as Kingdom Galvatron. I would want him, as well as Optimus and Megatron, to all be the same height as Kingdom Rodimus. This way more of the budget can go into the parts count and toolings to really get them to hide and tuck intrusive kibble out of the way to make them as accurate as possible (what does that even mean for SS86 Megatron's alt mode now though). We seen what happens when making a larger leader Galvatron already. So making him shorter should allow for the designers to mitigate the tread kibble on the backs of the arms or to compress the cannon rear down more and design it to be more accurate and to change a few other things. I really hope SS86 Galvatron isn't just a redeco along the lines of SS86 Cliffjumper though. That was an exclusive so it's somewhat questionable if it even really truly counts as a SS86 figure but it does exist. I would just be so disappointed with this if they do go that route instead of a new mold. Like Earthrise Optimus and Kingdom Ultra Magnus, Kingdom Galvatron just doesn't compare to Kingdom Rodimus, SS86 Hot Rod and SS86 Magnus. The extra budgets for them really shown though despite what some naysayers would claim. So I'd love an Optimus, Megatron and Galvatron to go right along with them.  More elaborate transformations. More transformation "tricks". More and better articulation. More and better paint apps. Little to no kibble at all really as Rodimus, Hot Rod and Magnus are almost entirely kibble free and super clean in robot mode and have beautifully streamlined alt modes. Higher parts count be it for transformation parts or just more weapons. I can do without blast effects or things like Matrix chains though but at least Optimus will have blast effects and Galvatron will have the Matrix chain. I'm all about swords, axes, flails, guns, beam sabers, jet packs or whatever else the toys had or they used on the show and movie. No basketballs though lol. For Optimus that would also include BOTH mobile drones (Roller and that other one he had from time to time made from the rear trailer wheels it seemed) and a really good "repair" drone thing.  I might be hyping myself up too much though. It's really too early to tell how these will turn out. And SS86 Galvatron will come out about four years after Kingdom Galvatron first did. That's not too bad really. Sure it seems like he JUST came out but we're at the halfway point. By the time he does actually hit shelves, people will want a new Galvatron. It's also why I think it will be a new mold too. If it were just a redeco or even a slight retool, it could've been pushed up into this year or put out as some sort of exclusive like some of the Buzzworthy Studio Series redecos. But it's coming out in 2025 with Megatron supposedly. So that really does give me hope for a new mold. We used to get new mold updates for many characters year after year for a while there from OG Generations (Optimus and Megs) to FoC (Optimus) to T30 (Optimus, Orion and 2 Megs) to CW (Optimus and Megs) to TR (2 Optimus and Megs) to PotP (Optimus/Orion) to Siege (Optimus and Megs) to Earthrise (Optimus and Megs) to Kingdom (Optimus and Megs) to Legacy 1 (Optimus). Not including, redecos of older toys still being released in market 6 stores, exclusives like VNR, Japanese releases, mostly non-G1/2 versions or any of the Starscreams that were also being released alongside them. Waiting four years for a new mold of a character is not going to be an actual issue. It's G1 Galvatron, he should have more toys than he actually does. It's crazy how few figures he actually gets compared to his contemporaries. G1, Universe 2.0, Titans Return and Kingdom. That's it. That's all the Galvatron molds. Dude can get another.
    • he's so small i love it, if they do all beast machines in core size it sure buy from me :D
    • Transformers: Age Of Extinction gave us Silver Optimus Prime, an interesting sub-line of Target Exclusive variant that didn't last beyond the movie. Like most of the movies, these mainline figures are simpler designs aimed at the young masses. Fortunately, there was one bright spot in the Age of Extinction Silver Knight Optimus Prime and Grimlock 2-Pack. - Read the Full News Story
    • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA If there's been ANY retail figure over the past two decades that could legitimately be confused for an actual McDonald's toy it would be this one. What's better is that this person is actually in a McDonald's too. That just makes it so much better. This is better than the Chromia pics on a painting table. Don't get me wrong though, I don't think it looks bad. It's just the colors of the figure makes me think of the old Happy Meal BM Cheetor from way back when in the year 2000. In fact, I dare say the yellow used on that figure back then looks better than the yellow used on this one. It's just a cute little kitty cat. Looking a bit like Go-Bots Cheetor from 2002...who was based on Beast Machines Cheetor so it just swings back around lol. Really hoping that Dinobot 2 doesn't get actually cancelled like is rumored. I want all the larger Beast Era characters done in core class now. Just a bunch of deformed little chibi animals and shit.
