i'd LOVE IT if they'd release music label soundwave w/o the mp3 player gimick in g1 colors. i want one so Powerglideing bad but i can't afford the 100+ price tag for him. i esp want one after i saw this yesterday http://www.reprolabels.com/Classics/soundwave.asp MUST PowerglideING HAVE!!

It's every bit as beautiful as you think it's going to be, that set. The WST Soundwave set is amazing, too.

Teen Titans was just borrowing some of the visual language of anime as a hook.

Personally my dislike of TFA's animation is just due to my dislike for the style. I don't care who's drawing it or what styles influenced it. I just think they look like guys in suites and less like robots.

:pfx

I don't think these guys look significantly different from G1 robots. The only real difference is the more fluid proportions in the Animated designs.

:pfx

And in all reality - i am warming up to the style, and i am optomistic that the series will be entertaining.

BUT - it does kinda annoy me that we have reverted to the men in suits (or men-in-tights) version of TFs

On the flip side - it makes the Kibilicious Toys that much more interesting because they share the stylistics of the cartoon while still very clearly being robots.

I think they just wanted something VERY different from the movie... and they definitely got that. I do think it might have been a bit too much in the opposite direction, but at the same time I am definitely not going to miss A/E/C... the "realistic" robots in those shows didn't prevent the shows from sucking total ass.

Neither did the crappy CG animation in the first season of Beast Wars prevent that show from being entertaining. It all comes down to the writing IMO.

You're 100% correct, in the end good writing and story telling will quickly make anyone forget about questionable animation style. I'm ready to give the series a fair shot, I'm just saying that they didn't do themselves any favours, IMO, by going with the animation style they did.

Also, on the point of story telling, while its able to make up for the animation on the show, it really doesn't do much for the toys. Good story telling make make me forget or forgive the fact that Starscream has an obnoxiously large chin, or that Prowl looks like a guy in a jump suite, but it won't do much in the way of toys. Regardless of how well the writing is, I still won't like the style, and thus won't by the figures.

I'm surprised they didn't continue the movie style, but hey, waddaya know?

And Icecap, aside from a few movie designs, transformers always looked like guys in cardboard boxes. It's all based on human(esque) proportions and in most cases the limbs are replaced by squares.

I have the feeling that TFA was Hasbro's emergency "back-up" alternative, in case the movie (and its designs) were a flop.

Also, I think that Hasbro was aware that the A/E/C look was reaching the point of diminishing returns and wanted to make a significant change in the overall look - to bring things more in line with what kids currently like.

The only thing i would disagree with is - when you say "didnt do themselves "any favors" you are thinking that the opinions of us adult'ish collectors matter one way or the other. Anyone have any reactions from real kids on the new designs? hows about the movie vs the TFA designs? My guess is that the kids like them just fine and more to the point - dont have any cognative dissonance between movie designs and TFA -its just Optimus and Bumblebee and thats that.

My other thought after reading your comments on a story making or not making the toy desirable:

Alternator Kitty-Vette - that is all.

I got into the Beast Wars line because the writing made the characters likeable. I *hated* the CG and I hated the "animal transformers" idea. It was OK when they were the odd ones out, but as the primary focus it didn't do anything for me. I warmed to the designs very quickly after I grew attached to personalities. I didn't plan on getting the toys until I happened to find 10th Anni Rhinox the day I went to TRU with an expiring coupon and had to buy *something.* I was surprised how much I liked the figure, went *nuts* trying to find a Waspinator, and now I even have some Blotty knock-offs and the surfing-ape Primal. (He's posed with the board under an arm, thumbing a ride from some Alternators.) Still jonesing for an original-mold Black Arachnia...

I think you missed my point.

I was referring to the BT/Alt Ravage (Tracks/Corvette remold)

Everyone bitched about what a stupid idea it was to have ravage in a humanoid body with a kitty head.

And then the BT story was translated - and for about 3 months, Ravage was THE FAN FAVORITE alternator.

Just saying - a good story does can make an impact on the desirability of a toy.

    • EDIT 2: Okay, I think my real problem with this was the marketing image. The main image shows four robot turtles standing together, so I was ready for four toys, not one. Admittedly, I was so disappointed that I did not bother to read the article fully. That's my fault. I apologize. That said, now that I understand it is THE van that turns into a robot, not "robot versions of the four turtles," that makes more sense, but I don't get the four heads. There are images here of a bandana free head which I gather is not included. I would actually prefer a non-specific generic turtle head for the robot. I think that would remove a lot of confusion. At least for me. EDIT 1: My bad, I misunderstood. It's one toy with swappable heads. So, you made a thing based on a four member team, and you only want to sell one toy? You're not even trying to get people to "Collect all FOUR!" You do understand how toy sales work, right? Original Comment: This is a perfectly fine idea executed TERRIBLY. You made four unique toys, each specific to each of the Ninja Turtles, that all turn into the same vehicle? It would be one thing if they joined together to form the van. There have been transformer sets like that before. This is just wasted opportunity. Not to mention, that van exists for the turtles to ride in together as a team, so if they can turn into vehicles ... what do they need a van for? I get that that's their van, and that's cute and all, but ... this is just dumb and disappointing. Why not think about what kind of car each of them would drive based on their personalities, or ask some car company if they want to do a tie-in promotional? What do I want with four copies of the same van and no one to ride in any of them? It makes no sense.
