Full Report from Wonder Festival Winter 2004!

I'm back with another balls-to-the-wall in-depth news report! This time it's Wonder Festival Winter 2004 and the Tokyo Toy Show, one good and one bad, at the same venue on the same day! Coincidence? I think not! The Tokyo Toy Show was way too lame to exist on it's own, so it was mooching off of WonFes. Anyhoo, check out this link to see lots of pics of both and all the Japanese toy goodness!

PS--For those of you who didn't see my photo shoot in the Japanese Toys "R" Us, check that out while you're there too!

Those life-size anime dolls were quite creepy. The perverse part of me wonders if they are anatomically correct.

:tfhuh Ok, here is the breaking news:

:tfhuh 1/ Million Pubishing will be releasing the Brnad new "Transformers-Generations Deluxe" on 22nd of March, 2004. You can preorder the book (Japan residents only) via fax (03-3267) or email: hanbai@millionpub.co.jp . 100 lucky buyers will each win a recoloured Rodimus Convoy. the figure's new name is "GOD PRIMUS". Could this be the "Primus" that we know, or even the one referred to in Energon/Superlink? Only time will tell.

:tftounge 2/ they will also be selling a new CD. I had a pic, but i lost it. I think it is the new "History of TFs" soundtrack referred to earlier at TFormers.com.

:tfhuh 3/ The TOY show gave away free "Toy festival transformer Collectors's Cards" with purchases of Superlink tFs at one stall only.

To see pics of GOD PRIMUS and the card, go to my photo site shown above and select "Transformers".

Now...here are my impressions of the festival:

The overall content was amazing. Like "ItcamefromJapan" said, it was a LOT better than previous offerings. Loads to buy and loads to see. however, this being japan, there were a few problems, which people thinking about visiting further shows shold be aware of:

:tfmad 1/ Pornography. There is simply LOTS of it :tfevil , both at the model show and the Toy show. Hardcore porn movies, games, illustrations, models and games depicting Transufomah!, sexual torture, paedophillia (a BIG problem, alongside Transufomah!, in Japan), and nudity in general are not seen by many companies or Japanes as a problem. Indeed, in the west, we display "gory" toys like "Hellraiser" toys, but not in the same scale as japan does with porn.

I saw hard core porn DVDs being sold next to transformer toys in the Toy festival and if you look at some of the pics I took of some of the models, you7ll realize that there are children with their parents at both shows....AND NOTHING IS DONE ABOUT IT.

:tfsad 2/ Otaku. These are Japanese nerds. They are a bit different from their western kin, in the fact that they can be very rude to their fellow man or woman. Many will happily push, shove or stampede ANYONE out of their way in order to fawn, photograph or touch the model, young girl, porn or toy that they are "into".

:tfgrin 3/ Cozplay. If you want to take pictures of Cozplay peeps, do it in the specially designated areas (normally outside in an enclosed space), and NOt indoors! it makes them angry...nothing scarier than a 7-foot tall Blanka with a complex!

:tflaugh1 4/ Photos are ok! Some places say no, but everyone and their dog welcomed the attention of cameras!

5/ Look for the home made stuff. In the model show especially, there are loads of "one off" customs, and scratch-built models for sale. A bit expensive, they nontheless give you the oppurtunity of getting some REAL lmtd edition Japsnese stuff (like that Buggy-Bot-Boy" I wanted and regretted not getting!

For pic 8 in the TF gallery, it says, basically:

Special products for the TF 20th anniversary

Transformers

Panned release this Spring

315 yen, including sales tax

Total 5 to collect

There is no mention of chase figures, which there normally is if available.

How big were these figures? Are they HOC size?

    • If you've not had your fill of Transformers collaborative news today, here is some more with a leaked product listing for the Project Knight: Transformers X Knight Rider crossover. We've been dreaming of this one, and it appears a transforming K.I.T.T. will be coming as soon as August! It must be something big and or special with a $49. - Read the Full News Story
    • Tonight on GotBot Goes Live, we talked Transformers news for the newest multipack and some reissues. We also talked collaboratives with TMNT, an Ectotron reissue and, maybe, even Star Wars? Plus, we address the MP Ginrai teaser image and answer who is Riggorus?
    • EDIT 2: Okay, I think my real problem with this was the marketing image. The main image shows four robot turtles standing together, so I was ready for four toys, not one. Admittedly, I was so disappointed that I did not bother to read the article fully. That's my fault. I apologize. That said, now that I understand it is THE van that turns into a robot, not "robot versions of the four turtles," that makes more sense, but I don't get the four heads. There are images here of a bandana free head which I gather is not included. I would actually prefer a non-specific generic turtle head for the robot. I think that would remove a lot of confusion. At least for me. EDIT 1: My bad, I misunderstood. It's one toy with swappable heads. So, you made a thing based on a four member team, and you only want to sell one toy? You're not even trying to get people to "Collect all FOUR!" You do understand how toy sales work, right? Original Comment: This is a perfectly fine idea executed TERRIBLY. You made four unique toys, each specific to each of the Ninja Turtles, that all turn into the same vehicle? It would be one thing if they joined together to form the van. There have been transformer sets like that before. This is just wasted opportunity. Not to mention, that van exists for the turtles to ride in together as a team, so if they can turn into vehicles ... what do they need a van for? I get that that's their van, and that's cute and all, but ... this is just dumb and disappointing. Why not think about what kind of car each of them would drive based on their personalities, or ask some car company if they want to do a tie-in promotional? What do I want with four copies of the same van and no one to ride in any of them? It makes no sense.
