How realistic is the TF's millenia old war?

Here's my take on the situation: they are, at heart, programed for war. And not out of any evil intentions--out of a need for survival.

Any civilization of pacifists will eventually be conquered by someone more willing to fight. It may not be today, may not be for 1000 years, but eventually those who are OK with war will conquer those who do not want to fight.

In the Transformers mythos, the Cybertronians know (or don't know, depending on the 'bot) that something big is coming: Unicron. If the Autobots were left to their own devices, after a few thousand years, most of them would get lazy, not train very hard, and believe Unicron to be a myth.

If Cybertron was populated with only Decepticons, eventually they would branch out to different planets, conquering here and there, only to be destroyed, eventually, by something nastier than themselves. If that happens, no more Cybertronians, Primus fails.

No, in order to tackle the burdens that the race was built for, both sides have to be at war with each other. As one side gets better at warfare, so does the other. They, in essence, train each other. They were BUILT to be each others equal, and as such, continuously cancel each other out. And, as has been mentioned time and again, they are robots... many of them don't ever "die" as such... they just have to go in for long repairs. They don't age. They can, essentially, carry on the fight forever. And when their body completely becomes too far gone for repairs, their spark rejoins the Matrix, and they are born again into a new body.

Just because the war is going on for "millions" of years, does not even mean that they are all fighting each other all at once, every day. There are lulls. To creatures that live forever, a thousand years of no fighting is an eyeblink. In the Dreamwave version, the two leaders disappeared for a "little while" and forces splintered into various factions. Some were fighting, others, I'm sure, were not. Eventually, they formed a moderate peace treaty that only lasted until Megatron had come back.

Neither side wants to push things too far, either. I'm sure that these guys have weapons that could wipe out a planet. But, if both sides have such technology, neither would want to use it for fear of having the same technology used on them in a moment of revenge.

All in all, I find it quite believable that the war could last as long as it does.

True indeed.

The Dutch and Spanish fought the 80 year war. But back then armies had to travel on foot and more importantly a city could only be taken in a siege. Which could take months as troops had to wait for the city to surrender. So say Zutphen (my hometown) might be under siege but that did not prevent Amsterdam from having a great time economically.

Obviously when one is at war with another nation it does not mean they are actually fighthing. Getting ready for a war takes time as well. The US went into war shortly after Pearl Harbor because Germany declared war on them but it was not untill nearly 3 years later that groundforces actually engaged the Germans.

Because the majority of the war was just Alpha Trion and the fembots playing pranks on Shockwave

It might have been three years to engage the Germans in Northern Europe, but the US began fighting them on the ground in Africa the following year.
