And how would the other Decepticons gain access to the recordings? how would Soundwave play them back? having the stuff inside a vehicle mode is useless if the others can't hear or see the data. Why would soundwave's whole body need to be devoted to communications? simple, the added processing and transmitting power. That is why.

Christ, what are you, ten? Have you not heard of Wi-Fi? Soundwave could simply transmit it directly to whatever medium his fellow Cons have built into their bodies. Jeez.

Tramp, seriously, it's over. Doesn't matter how many times you repeat the same thing or how often you've watched Murphy's interviews. The number of retcon explanations you've got ready to cut & paste is insignificant. There is no reason for mass-shifting. It just doesn't fit into a mainstream-oriented movie. Please, let it die, because you're starting to piss people off and I don't really want Pete to hurt me for saying what I really, really want to say to you. Get over it. It ain't G1. New 'verse, some old characters in new forms, some old concepts, but overall it's new. Take it as it is and enjoy it. Or don't. I don't care anymore.

Yes, there are reasons for it. Whether you choose to accept those reasons or not is up to you. I really don't care. However, that does not mean that those reasons are not valid, or that they are nonexistant. Nor does that mean that they cannot work in the sequels or have no place in the movies. Hasbro certainly felt that Soundwave needed the ability to Mass convert. Don Murphy certainly felt that Soundwave not being able to mass convert would take away from his character, which is one of the reasons why he advocated holding Soundwave until the second movie.

Then what need of they for a dedicated communications specialist?

I was in the Army. All Military units have dedicated communications specialists who carry and operate the radio equipment. They don't transmit that directly to the other soldiers. They either hand deliver the printed messages, or they play the audio messages directly for the commander. All communications are centralized but the others still need access to those communications. A small wrist comm isn't going to cut it. Soundwave is the Decepticon communications specialist. He is the medium from which the others transmit and receive communications and data. he is the one that plays back the audio and visual recordings. He could not do that if he were a van or other vehicle. Why do you think Megatron relied on Soundwave so much?

And what would stop him from doing this if he were to have the form of, say, an over-customized van whose entire rear half was composed almost entirely of stereo equipment? I think that'd take care of all the requirements you have for his design (transmission, communication, carrying smaller 'Cons and coordinating their activities, etc.) without relying on an ability whose major theatrical use in the past two decades has been in a series of dreadful comedies starring Rick Moranis.

EDIT: He could even have a sunroof which would end up on his chest, and through which he could release his minions...

Tramp, those "reasons" are about as effective as the Maginot Line. Yes, it was an effective defense. But one completely ignored by the Blitzkreig, which showed how REAL military operations of the time should proceed.

Actually, they are alot more effective than that. The tactical and technical advantages of having a large robot mode, but a small, inconspicuous alt mode which ties directly to your primary function, and enhances that function, is undeniable. Whether you like the idea or not, that does not invalidate the value of such a design. You cannot say that mass conversion cannot be done plausibly in live action without being silly. It has been done multiple times. There is nothing stupid nor silly about mass shifting. IF you think there is, why do you think so? To say that it is stupid because it is stupid is not a reason. To say that it is stupid because it is un realistic doesn't hold up because most of the things you find in science fiction and fantasy are unrealistic. That is why it is called fantasy. Don't discount the reasons I have given simply because you find the concept of mass conversion stupid; especially if there really is no reason why you feel it is stupid.

There are reasons for mass conversion, and for Soundwave to have an alt mode that directly correlates with his function and name, and harkens back to his G1 design, which also focused on his function and character. His function and character were the reasons for his particular alt mode, those reasons are no less valid today, and mass conversion ties directly to that. It can be done believably in a live action movie too, so there really is no reason not to do so as long as it is done in moderation.

Yes, but it would also stick out like a sore thumb. It is too flashy of an alt mode. This is also why a news van is out of the question.

You were in the human Army. You're not a damn alien robot that would likely have most of the on-demand comm gear they would need built into their own bodies. And I've got news for you--the Army is moving in that direction too! Ever heard of Land Warrior? The project whose aim is to make the individual soldier practically a squad in his own right, at least in terms of information-sharing technology? Communications, digital terrain mapping, GPS navigation, instant updates on the positions of his teammates and other friendly units plus the movements of known enemies based on real-time satellite, human- and drone-based reconnaisance, AND the ability to add to that recon with his own audio/visual sensors all built right into his uniform, along with armor, weapons, ammo, etc. If the U. S. Army can do that what's stopping a giant alien robot from putting it all into his own body? Hell with cybernetics we can probably do it to ourselves soon.

Why does Megatron need a communication specialist? Maybe Soundwave, in a more realistic role, is more like a command operations Stryker vehicle--full of gear to process all that info as it comes in and disseminate it to the troops. SW can do that without changing into a tape deck. In the cartoons, Megatron relied on Soundwave because it was part of the toy commercial. Making the TFs more human, with human limitations, made it easier for kids to identify with them and more likely they would buy toys.

A mail van, or a delivery truck, would blend right in. His minions could be disguised as packages or even the driver, using some kind of holo-technology to mask themselves. Plenty of space for all his gear. Why won't that work?

And exactly why is that a problem? So far there hasn't been a single movie design for the Decepticons which hasn't stood out in one way or another (with the possible exception of Frenzy, whose alt mode I haven't seen yet)--you've got a tank, a minesweeper, a police car, a fighter, and an alien spacecraft. Besides, do you ever pay attention to a thumping van other than to think its owner spends far too much money on ways to permanently remove his hearing before age thirty? ^_-

Leave the toy aspect out of it. The in story reasons why Megatron relied on him was because he was designed and built specifically with communications recording, processing and transceiving in mind, and the others, including Megatron, only had limited capacity in communications. Even with the whole "land Warrior" gear, you still need a communications hub at the command level. The Commander certainly does not have Land Warrior equipment. His communications operators operate the equipment and deliver the data to him or play it for him. And they relay his orders to the troops out in the field. That is the way it works in the military. Soundwave's primare function is Conmunications Operations. He is Megatron's Communications hub. When he wants to communicate to the troops, he goes through Soundwave. When the troops need to communicate to him, they need to go through Soundwave. When Megatron needs intelligence displayed or played back, it is Soundwave that does so. That is what he is designed for. That is his sole purpose. His allt mode is directly tied into that purpose, and better than any vehicle mode could be.
