They were created by Unicron to further escalate the Cybertronian Civil Wars. They latch onto the bigger bots, enhancing their powers, creating more energy for Unicron to feed on. Then, as the Transformers became more dependant on them, they would eventually start to slowly drain their hosts of their sparks and other energy, which would be fed upon by Unicron.

In simplest terms, Hasbro likes using the term "con" as a robotic descripter, like OmniCON, TerrorCON, MiniCON.

 

It is no longer a Decepticon designator

 

Generation One DOES NOT have ANYTHING to do with Armada (aside from concepts, character designs, cameos, and all that other nitpicky Blot somebody will bring up).  The whole "-bot" and "-con" as faction designators thing is no longer in effect.

well, armada autobots teamed up with some of them, and armada decepticons teamed up with some of them, so I'm gonna have to say that minicons aren't inherently good or evil.

megatron uses the term minicon in g1 in the episode bot when threatening swindle in b.o.t

 

i just look at them as micromasters myself as if i can give them a more distinctive personallity that way
