The deal with the reissues...

My Alt. Mode Sucks

Recommended Posts

OK...while I'm not a big collector of the TRU reissues, one thing I do wonder, in the case of the molds rumored to be missing or broken (Wheeljack, Swoop, several of the other Series 1 and Series 2 releases)...why CAN'T they reverse-engineer them from toys left over from the 1980s that're still in fairly good shape? Seriously. If Hong Kong bootleggers can do it for the gestalts, why can't Takara do it for the "lost" molds?

Bootleggers not only use old molds but they also recreate molds. Remember the giant Omnicons and the scaled down Beast machine figs? Hasbro's just toying with us and they're cheap.

Yeah. I never buy into the we can't make them cause the original molds are damaged argument. It all boils down to profitability. How much is it gonna cost us? And how much money can we expect to make? Takara's just a business like all the others.

It's not that they can't. Heck, we have enterprising fans who repro stuff. Legal issues be damned. :)

Yes,

It would be easy to reverse engineer molds.  Just take some clay and mold it to orginal figures with the indentions, then make a new mold of it.

But making new mold cost them alot of money.  This is why we see so many repaints that are suppose to be different characters, like the combiner limbs for example, 2 of the same molds.
