Could Mirage Not Be The Name of Ferrari 458 Italia In Transformers 3?

In one of the many leaks concerning the Transformers Dark of the Moon film, it was revealed that the character sporting the Ferrari 458 Italia as the alternate mode, would be named Mirage, however; this may not actually be the case. According to Nelson, the administrator of Director Michael Bay's official website "Shoot For the Edit," the character will be "named after a famous Italian" and "speaks with an Italian accent." So which one is right? Nobody (outside of the film's production) knows for sure the name of the Ferrari character, but this reminds us of Transformers. Read more. Read the Full News Story Here

I call BS.

These places didn't come up with these names out of nowhere and decided "Hey, he looks like he should be named Mirage". And the designs come from the studios that Hasbro uses as a reference point to make the figures, and they get names with them. Look at Wheeljack. He went from being called Q, to Brains, and it wasn't until recently that it was said in one of the children's books (along with the IDW comics) that the Mercedes Benz is indeed Wheeljack. Now we have news from Nelson that the Benz isn't Brains, but he didn't say who it is.

Naming the Italian car after a famous Italian wouldn't be in the spirit of Transformers. These guys aren't given human names...because they're not human. Optimus is a truck, but his name isn't Mack, or Peter[bilt], it's Optimus Prime. Their names are based off of their personality, their vehicle/beast mode, their ability, their function, their overall look, or maybe some other reason. Optimus Prime would translate to "Best First" if you look at the Latin roots. So he's the leader. Bumblebee has an overall black and yellow color scheme, and he's generally small. Jazz has a smooth personality and goes with the flow. Ratchet is a doctor, and for a mechanoid, using a ratchet the way a human uses medical forceps is logical (plus it's also a spin on the character Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest).
