Why I Won't Buy MP Grimlock

Same here but not in a hurry to add Grimlock just yet, probably wait until September. Though there are a few that I have to have, there are many more that I don't care for. Like I said before I'm all about building a collection for my kids to one day enjoy. and so they do not have to start from scratch. But I'm also not above spending $200 for Rodimus, or $130 for the Dreadwing and Smokescreen Tokyo Fair set. It all depends on what I want to add to my collection. As far as past items I will only pay what I feel is right price. I've been wanting a Cryo Scourge since I passed him up years ago and finally got one MISB for $30 w $4 shipping. So you you don't have to spend an arm or a leg to get what you want. But yes as the older you get the more your tastes are defined. I've looked back at what I've paid for items in the past when I was younger and thought I was crazy for it.

It's sensible to wait until the inevitable sale offers. I got Hasbro MP Skywarp for 1/3 the price by waiting a couple of months. Having said that, I preordered Takara Skywarp and Grimlock as soon as they were announced! But those figures tend not to go down in price.

Almost all I buy these days is high-end stuff once in a while (Takara MPs or specialist stuff like iGear), but I don't spend money on the basic stuff (movie toys/PCC/WFC/Animated etc) so I save a lot that way. I'd rather buy a Takara MP than five multiples of every figure in the latest Hasbro line :roll

And only get what you actually *want*... I passed on the Impossible toys TRNS Arcee, and never bothered with the Rabid Squirrel version; not spending a fortune on those makes it easier to reward myself with the much better iGear Arcee! :tflaugh

Very simple I keep what I want and sell the rest, but I let the merits of the figure dictate what I keep, not the line. Gave up on being a completionist years ago, but thats a whole other can of worms.

Yeah... Being a completist and buying doubles almost ruined the hobby for me... Good thing I kicked those two habits before it was too late...

Yeah, I gave up on being a completionist a looooooooong time ago due to how quickly I was running out of space and I didn't like the overwhelming feeling of stuff around me. Also, I stopped being a completionist due to quality of the Transformer designs declining sharply in the last 10 years (seriously, RiD was the last greatest Transformers Line). So I don't nearly spend the money on Transformer toys like the rest of you do. In fact, I think my last TF purchase was a G1 Huffer about two months ago. Of course, it doesn't help that I am unemployed at the moment. If I had the money though, I would mainly stick with my favorite Generation 1 figures and a few Masterpiece figures. That's it.

I was going to get into the other lines of Transformer toys like Alternity and Transformer Classics, but I just know me. Once the newness of the figure wore off, up on Ebay it would go. Transformer collecting for me is about nostalgia, not buying the newest versions of the old characters. Same goes with Gi Joe too. Hence, why I have a tiny collection so far. I only make the exception with Masterpiece Transformers because they are a much cooler and super-detailed version of my favorite characters. I only have Takara Skywarp and Grimlock at the moment. My next two figures I plan on getting are Prime and Megatron. However, my next Transformer I buy is the Predaking giftset in November. I can't wait! :)

I've always been selective in what I own. It was only in the past year that I REALLY splurged on TFs and other transforming figures. I had a really big Macross kick, and if you think Transformers are expensive, Macross is a WHOLE other ballgame. I'm settling down again, I've got the big figures for the ages (MP Prime, MP Grimlock, a Takatoku Valkyrie, RotF Leader Prime, HftD Leader Star Scream, and most of the Human Alliance figures) and a couple other expensive gems here and there. The only extravagant/importy figures I have left to collect are: Alternity Convoy(questionable, I might end up skipping) and Choro-Q Megatron. After that I'm sticking to the smaller sized retail figures, and then only the ones I want.

However, another spending demon has been slightly born in me: A desire to buy a MISP double of several figures I own, namely: Drift, Generation's 'Bee, HA 'Bee, HA Barricade, HA Jazz and maybe a couple others so I'll be able to still have the figures to play with after my current ones wear out beyond all repair 5, 10, maybe 15 years from now.

Yeah, I was going to get into Macross. However, Jetfire was enough for me on my Macross kick; so that desire was fleeting.

As far as owning doubles, as long as you are not keeping one MISB for monetary reasons. I highly doubt that Transformers from the last 20 years will ever be worth anything like the G1 (and to some extent G2) Transformers have been.

I have never paid more than $100 on a single toy/Transformers and the day I do, I will beg my wife to slap the crap out of me. I was however one of the lucky few who was able to buy/pre-ordered MP Grimlock at toysrus.com for the $59.99 sale price and am patiently waiting for its delivery. I love Transformers, but you really have to keep it real, if you're collecting for nostalgia sake, then spending ridiculous $$$ on figures just isn't worth it. I collect for nostalgia's sake, and have been back and forth adding and deleting Encore Omega Supreme from my Amazon.com shopping cart over the last few months. It's a figure I have always wanted since I was a kid, but the price is just too close to $100 for me and I can't do that on a toy I will open up once or twice and close and save in a closet or storage bin. We're moving at years end to a larger home and I will have my own "Man room" where I can display all my sports stuff and Transformers figures they way I like. I was never a completest, I just usually buy the things I like/want.

I dunno, I guess me setting a price limit to what I would spend on a toy is the way it works for me. The most I paid for a Transformer was Takara Collection Megatron #6 years ago when they were released and that was for like $65. I am not running out of space nor money, but once my G1 collection has reached the desired state, I will be done.

I had Grimlock in my hand at Toys R US. I picked it up looked at the price tag and said, "No." It's not that funds are tremendously scare and that I am burned out or anything. I just cannot justify getting a figure that I could care less about. I have picked up all the bots from the latest line-up to come out that I want.

Hmm...this is so interesting how many people are so turned off to MP Grimlock. I always thought he was an awesome character to have a Masterpiece for. He's really well done and worth the 70 bucks, let alone 150 bucks for the Takara version. He's an original, well design mold in the Masterpiece line and he's well built; and, most importantly, he's not a repaint that this line is known for. Poor Grimlock not getting any love. :tfsad
