2009 saw the release of Takara's 8th masterpiece figure. For the fans that were lucky enough to order him before stocks ran low, he quickly became a favorite. Let's take a look at the latest installment of the masterpiece line.

Check my post following the review to see the gimmick overview.

Grimlock comes packaged in robot mode. The first thing you'll notice is the brilliant gold-chromed chest, this feature really makes this figure stick out on the shelf. Inside of the chest, you'll be able to spot an autobot insignia encased in clear plastic.

From the back, you can spot his signature backpack, made of dino parts. You'll also see more chrome on the back of the legs. The sculptors really spared no expense when fitting in all of Grimlock's details and the end product looks fantastic. Another thing to note is that he is on the smaller side of masterpieces just a smudge bigger than Starscream.

On the bright side, he has a large foot print, which makes him very stable.

There's a small switch located on the back of Grimlock's head. Lift it up for a red visor, push it down for a blue visor. Red is accurate to the original toy, while blue is accurate to the cartoon. To complete the features in robot mode, he comes with a light-up energo sword and blaster.

Head: ball joint/ Shoulders: ball joint/ Upper Arm: Pinned for rotation/ Elbow: double jointed(2pt. ratchet in upper, lower is pinned for (about 90*)forward and back movement)/ Wrist: pinned for rotation/ Hands: Right(ball joint monted thumb) Left(ball joint mounted thumb, fingers pinned to move in and out, index finger can move independently)/ Waist: pinned for unlimited rotation/ Hips: pinned to swing forward and back, 90* outward spread)/ Upper Legs: pinned for unlimited rotation/ Knees: ratchet 90* bend/ Feet: negligible movement.

Overall poseability, is set up well, though the hands are set up strange, and shoulder movement is slightly limited due to its bulkieness.

Robot mode score: 10/10

Transformation is simple with the bulk of it being in the legs.

The good looks continue into dinosaur mode, never before have we had such a perfect representation of this mode. The toes and teeth are die cast while the claws and tail are chromed and some nice gold detailing is visible in the neck. A large autobot insignia is painted on the chest.

There is very little paint in this mode, with most colors and details molded in. This mode simply looks fantastic with all of the small details and nothing spared, big or small.

As seen pictured above, dino mode has an eye changing gimmick similar to the one in robot mode, simply lift up the top of his head, this will expose a rotating piece of plastic inside, rotate the plastic to get the desired color. Also pictured above is the flamethrower inside of his mouth which can pivot up and down. The mouth can also move and will close if you push a button on his left cheek. If you wag the tail, his head will swing back and forth in a jerking motion.

This figure is also quite poseable in this mode, reusing many of the joints from robot mode. The tail, hips, knees, arms, and head are all poseable, and the fingers can even move individually.

Alt. mode score: 10/10

Robot mode: 10/10 Despite being short its looks and poseability make this mode great.

Alt. mode: 10/10 A great representation of this mode with looks and playability.

Overall: 10/10 A perfect representation of this character. If it's not out of your budget, BUY IT!

The blaster and sword can be held in either hand, when place in the right hand, there is a button behind his right shoulder that will activate the LED inside of the hand, and light up the weapon.

Also included are the apron, bow-tie, and tray of drinks from the G1 episode "Madman's Paradise". It is rather goofy and random, but it's fun.

The brain transfer device from "Grimlock's New Brain" is also included and is yet another fun feature. As seen above, Grimlock makes a donation to Prime.
