BLOG: Will You Be Watching Revenge In IMAX On the Real Deal? Or the Fake One?

So a fan over at our (shameless plug) Facebook page (become a fan!) shared something quite interesting with us today. You may or may not have heard, but there was actually a big broo-ha when comedian Aziz Ansari of NBC's Parks and Recreation complained on his Twitter account that AMC is charging "$5 extra for a slightly bigger screen [than the normal one]" and calling it the IMAX experience. He also later called shenanigans on IMAX, Corp. too, for letting them use their name even though it wasn't the 72 feet of IMAX goodness. What is the difference, really? Well, LF Examiner posted an astounding comparison image of the "real" IMAX versus the "fake" IMAX. Read more.

I'd like to see it in IMAX, but I'll be on vacation when it comes out, so just the classic silver screen for me.

IMAX uses a "wobbling" film to keep the image 100% stable, normal cinema has a slight side to side motion from the film projector..

I mentioned this here recently and I don't think much of anyone took notice.

I actually live near a real Imax (45 minutes away)- but I'm so disgusted with what IMAX is doing I wonder if I should stop giving them my money period. If they weren't charging extra for these fake IMAX screens I wouldn't care.

But they are.

Just do yourself a favor, and go to an official IMAX theater, if you wanna see it in that format. Leave the IMAX experience ones alone!

Uhh.. at the IMAX theater near me, which is a REAL IMAX theater, you have to get the tickets for Transformers Revenge of the Fallen the IMAX experience to actually see it in IMAX. if you don't get tickets for that then it's just the regular screen version.

What no one watched the doc?

Didn't watch it, but I understand that it's more stable. But it's just one of those things where the difference is totally lost on 96% of all film goers. We've been watching less stable movies our entire lives and it generally doesn't bother us. Hell, given the current state of multiplexes, I'm happy if the movie is in focus, the sound works and the people next to me aren't carrying on a conversation through the movie.

I also heard that these things are being pushed as higher resolution, but then that was disputed as well (I don't remember the specs on that, and it was slightly over my head anyhow).

Actually, I suppose if they promised ushers that would aggressively boot out people talking through the movie, and a projectionist watching the film and fixing problems as they occurred rather than after somebody walks out of the movie to complain I'd be happy to pay an extra $5.
