Okay, where do I suppose to start with? Hmm...

This thing been irritating recently. Shrug.gif sweatbead.gif

So yeah, Chinese Mandarin is my nature tongue, and I'm a huge English language enthusiast since I was kid, I mean look, the whole world is using it! Also been learning Russkiy jazic, Deutschen sprache & Indonesian on recent years, but when I come into interaction with things that require adequate English, such as internet forum, interact with foreigners, making an international phone call, taking care of passports & stuffs on abroad, or others, I always try my best to come out with perfect grammar, correct spelling and pronounces. But then I realized how the basic use and application of language have changed on recent years, it is really sad to notice that people these days, especially teens, prefer to speak and typing text messages with Textspeaks or Chinglish. And yes, this is my biggest concern above all.

I mean, if you could put time and efforts on intentionally misspelling words, you could also do the same for intentionally spelling the words RIGHT. I fully aware and understand it's for the sake of simplicity, like some people said. But if this trend keep going on, I'm afraid 2 - 3 generations ahead of now, the future of languages, especially English, won't be good. Also, off note, this is kinda silly, but it's also contribute to my total lost of interest on video gaming / online video gaming. Too much incomprehensible abbreviations, new words, etc.

Oh, and also, one thing that I discover upon joining international English-speaking message boards, like TFans, is that I came in here with perfect English just so I could assimilate myself more into the related society, but then when I saw even the native English speakers themselves are having hard time with right spelling and such (which is whether intentional or not), and preferred 1337-t4lk over the proper English language, I felt like I just jumped into a "proper-English-speaking" bandwagon, but come to realize that the bandwagon already been left by the others. I'm okay with LOL, ROFL, etc. But what really irritates me are intentional misspells, "ths thrd sux bcoz we got n0 txt-spks here, lulz" and the alike.

Ah well, it's been like.. 20 minutes for me to type all these rants above. sweatbead.gif

Caine.

If you wanted to leave, all you had to do was post in Bumblemus's topic. optimuslaugh2.gif

I agree with what you've said. (Though, I might be one of the offenders here. I'll admit my grammar is terrible, I didn't actually grasp the entire concept until college. Yay for small town Texas education. sweatbead.gif ) I do worry about the TextSpeak thinning out the language, too. For the most part, I've stopped typing internet shorthand like BRB, unless I'm in a hurry. When I was younger, I caught myself saying "BRB" to someone when I was leaving to do something.
Though, in forums and chats, I find poor grammar slightly excusable. It's a very laid back writing environment, unlike writing an email, letter, blog post or novel. Plus once it's out there, it's out there. It can't be edited as much as one would like. (and if it could, I'd imagine folks would get to the point of "...'Kay! We get it, we get it! onto a new statement! Stop editing for grammar in a chat!")

Oh, and one last thing. What's Chinglish?

Try to put your mouse pointer at those underlined texts. icon_wink.gif

i'm a perfectionist with my spelling/grammar in work but on the internets & msn/emails/texts between friends i really don't care about my writing - if people get the general gist of what i'm saying then happy days

i don't think this is a new problem though - the adults complaining about "txt tlk" need to remember that most of their generation can't write at all! i'm constantly tearing apart f'ing solicitors in work with their dumb statements (it's quite shocking tbh)

I'm with siburke. My first boss at the company I work for wrote the worst emails I'd ever seen (aside from the ones in supposed English from the Montreal branch. guh copy.gif). It was hellish just to read the things. The sentences ended wherever he felt like putting a period. At times that was in the middle of the sentence. The spelling was horrible. In fact, the first problem with translating his notes was to figure out what words he was using. THEN you could start figuring out what order they should have been in. This is a guy who spoke English perfectly.

Too bad he couldn't write it.

And this was way before the texting revolution and, other than emails at work, he had no interest in computers or the internets.

Language evolves. Many current English spellings are previous misspellings that became accepted. Its the same deal with pronunciations. So long as its possible for others to be able to understanding each others' meanings, misspellings and the like aren't a problem.

*Demands we go back to proper English*

Because it's just not English unless it's sightly less bastardised Latin, French and German!

Language evolves.

I think this is the important thing- languages are always changing.

And I used to do spelling bees 'n sh*t.

i've just recently discovered poker palace on myspace and have found myself constantly ignoring the chat box due to this crap. JMO, 133t 5p34|< is more tolerable than txt tlk.
WraithVerge
Yeah. Even the language from last year is different from todays. And the thing is, the meaning of the words themselves change.

EXAMPLE: "gay" in the 1940's- "we had a gay time last night!"

Just try saying that today without getting looks. (from people of all persuasions!)

I got to admit, even though I am English, my use of the language and consequently the written form is kinda going downhill, but mainly due to my poor typing skills - doh! However, when using text on mobile / cell phones, I try and use proper English grammar and spelling as much as possible.

Knowing me, there may be a few errors in the above statement - either from an argumentative standpoint, or a grammatical one.

I make sure they're spelled right, but can't help it if not. I rarely use "text speak" or anything, but acronyms I do use. Text speak is good on phones when it's harder to type on...

I demand that we go back to Iambic Pentameter! cussing.gif

But I think Caine's real mistake was joining an internet message board thinking he was going to be able to "assimilate myself more into the related society".

Sorry dude, but the Internets are about as far removed from REAL life as your gonna get....

Darth Caine
Nah, that I could be okay with, Hunter. I mean.. Look, sometimes I do intentionally mistype etc, on several occasions, especially on INH.. laughlol.gif

My biggest concern is... eh... Chinglish & txt-talk on society here. sweatbead.gif
Those, my friend, are what prompted me to think about this whole language issue.
