Full Version: Creating a Data Base for toy mods

Last night I just picked up on a whim, movie Camshaft, movie Swindle repaint.

I got home transformed the toy and I remembered sometime ago, last year, that there was a mod of some sort to improve the head or some hidden thing about the transformation of the figure not explained in the instructions.

It took me a while but I found the transformation tip and the head mod, which BTW made the figure 10 times better.

It was in looking for this stuff that was a pain. I eventually found the head mod instructions but the corresponding pics were removed. However thank god that this link existed:

http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/transformers...e-neck-mod.html

I was thinking if there was a way to list all posts relating to each figures specific mod or trick. Mind you these would only be mods to make the current design of the figure BETTER or the way it should have been out of the box. For example Lockdowns hand mod to get the hands out further or mods to make movie deluxe brawls shoulders work better.

And with each figure list the hidden stuff like CL Galvatrons walker mode.

Is that possible to make this sort of feature? and please don't tell me that "the search function is your friend"...took me 30 minutes to find the neck mod.

Thanks

i can never find what i'm looking for in the search...

how about the TF wiki? could a link to "toy mods" be placed on the bottom of the character pages?

I completely second this. It almost seems like the forum architecture is not the appropriate/most effective way to archive stuff like this. If something like this isn't implemented here, I just may host such a service myself (w/massive linkage to TFans, of course) from my own webhost.

I'm just surprised there isn't a dedicated forum in the kitbasher's area with the best/most used mods.

I know I don't have the time right now to do all the mods I want to on the figures I already own. Post graduation, I want the actual modding to take longer than the forum searching for the mods.

The forum isn't the problem, allthough the search could be better ...

.. the real problem is people posting images hosted on sites like imageshak ... why don't you just upload all those pics to the forum ???
After searching for far too long I usually find threads missing al the images or just showing "this image has been removed" ... yay ... whoever doesn't upload suxx =P
siburke939
all members get upload limits & many of the people posting "fixes" also do a lot of kitbashing - that probably means they want to save their upload limit for their kitbashes (just saying)

i'm sure if you just bump the threads & ask for pics someone will either have them on their PC or be able to take new ones

Does the gallery go against a user's upload limit? I thought that could be used in addition to the user's upload limit. (Not sure. I haven't looked into the board Gallery, yet.)

I figure if someone wants to get in touch with one of the board staff, they could set up a gallery collecting all the toy mods?
siburke939
i haven't looked into the gallery limit yet either (it's quite a new feature & my collection's in my loft so i don't need any long-term pics right now!)

could be an idea thumbsup1.gif

You do realize that the number of attachments is limited on this forum? So, after a while, they will be deleted, either by the posted themselves, or because the board is upgraded/cleaned up. Furthermore, many of these mods have been created before TFormers implemented their "Garage" galleries where people can upload their pictures.

back to the TF wiki idea...

http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Main_Page does that have a facility to upload pictures? (i'm sure it does)

http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Kitbashing <--- sounds like a good page to add a "fixes" link to

someone must be good at editing wiki pages !

Both of these statements cover important facets of what would be an effective solution. Siburke is on the right track, as a wiki caters better to the "database" model of searching/dishing information. The forum would still be extremely effective in terms of cutting down the bloat of discussion that would accompany a new mod/fix on the wiki. But as Father Time pointed out, it's simply the nature of the beast (TFans.com), as a forum that churns through so many posts for any given interval, to do some trimming. This is especially true for images, since they take up so much more bandwidth in terms of storage and transmission.

On the solution side, Siburke's wiki suggestion solves the indexing/searching/cataloging issue, and still gives some leeway for discussion of certain mods w/o over-bumping forum threads. It would not be a bad idea, however, to have a TFans original forum thread link included in any given wiki entry... if not a snapshot of it at the time the fix/mod enters the wiki.

And both Father Time's and Schlecki02's points drive home the fact that while the forum may be good for cooking up the final fix's info... it is just not the most effective solution for archiving it.

Granted, there is a bit of manpower required to implement any collection of the suggestions thus far. My impression is that the least that could be done is a forum branch with some restrictions in place for naming conventions, so as to be more easily searched. This would potentially include the Series, Class, and Name of the modded figure. From there any additions/collaborations could be branched, and the first post could be edited after the all the churning is done. There would surely be some duplicates here and there, and someone'd just have to man-up and say "looks like somebody beat me to it" and delete/concatenate their post. This would still present the problem of image hosting, unless there was a way to set one such forum to not automatically prune images. If so, it would be responsible of the posters to use images that are just small enough to do the trick, yet large/cropped enough to show the correct detail. If someone doesn't have the Photoshop/GIMP skills to do this, then somebody else could help collaborate and achieve this minimalist approach.

The more robust option would be a wiki (as Siburke suggested), and dedicated storage, either on TFormers or some volunteer's server. This would be the optimal solution in my eyes, and would hope a similar minimalist image-storage approach as above would be used... if necessary biggrintf.gif

All of this, of course, are suggestions of someone taking full advantage of some benevolent webmaster's bandwidth... and any/all/none of this would have to go through that person. Duh.

But unless Hasbro starts employing Jin to hand-make all of their figures (and thus make them too expensive for me)... some degree of cataloging solution seems like a good idea.

...ahem. ROBOTS

This Idea is mostly for mods that "FIX" figure problems or uncovers cool things about the transformation not found in the instructions.

Since my walmart has been unloading a back log of TF movie toys and after getting Galvatron I have a whole new love for tank bots I'll be looking for a new movie Brawl and i'd like to (with out pain of course) find the actual mod/fix that fixes brawls shoulders.

These really important fixes need to be archived in some way so it is easy to access.

I'm thinking something like:

Line >
Transformer Movie >
Class >
Deluxe >

BRAWL Mod Fix Hidden Feature

SWINDLE Mod Fix Hidden Feature

Line >
Transformer Classics >
Class >
Deluxe >

SUNSTREAKER Mod Fix Hidden Feature

GALVATRON Mod Fix Hidden Feature

This is sort of what I'd like to see. You click on the correct line then the correct toy class and then you see a list of every figure in that class and across from the name are your options: are you looking for a Mod Fix or do you want to see if there is a Hidden Feature on the toy.

As far as extreme make over jobs like giving movie swindle a new head and using rubber bands on the doors that can go somewhere else. to limit the amount of pictures and pages we only need to focus on fixes and feature that make the current design of the toy you purchased better. Sorta like getting new patches for your favorite video game.
