The forum isn't the problem, allthough the search could be better ...
.. the real problem is people posting images hosted on sites like imageshak ... why don't you just upload all those pics to the forum ???
You do realize that the number of attachments is limited on this forum? So, after a while, they will be deleted, either by the posted themselves, or because the board is upgraded/cleaned up. Furthermore, many of these mods have been created before TFormers implemented their "Garage" galleries where people can upload their pictures.
Both of these statements cover important facets of what
would be an effective solution. Siburke is on the right track, as a wiki caters better to the "database" model of searching/dishing information. The forum would still be extremely effective in terms of cutting down the bloat of discussion that would accompany a new mod/fix on the wiki. But as Father Time pointed out, it's simply the nature of the beast (TFans.com), as a forum that churns through so many posts for any given interval, to do some trimming. This is especially true for images, since they take up so much more bandwidth in terms of storage and transmission.
On the solution side, Siburke's wiki suggestion solves the indexing/searching/cataloging issue, and still gives some leeway for discussion of certain mods w/o over-bumping forum threads. It would not be a bad idea, however, to have a TFans original forum thread link included in any given wiki entry... if not a snapshot of it at the time the fix/mod enters the wiki.
And both Father Time's and Schlecki02's points drive home the fact that while the forum may be good for cooking up the final fix's info... it is just not the most effective solution for archiving it.
Granted, there is a bit of manpower required to implement any collection of the suggestions thus far. My impression is that the least that could be done is a forum branch with some restrictions in place for naming conventions, so as to be more easily searched. This would potentially include the Series, Class, and Name of the modded figure. From there any additions/collaborations could be branched, and the first post could be edited after the all the churning is done. There would surely be some duplicates here and there, and someone'd just have to man-up and say "looks like somebody beat me to it" and delete/concatenate their post. This would still present the problem of image hosting, unless there was a way to set one such forum to not automatically prune images. If so, it would be responsible of the posters to use images that are just small enough to do the trick, yet large/cropped enough to show the correct detail. If someone doesn't have the Photoshop/GIMP skills to do this, then somebody else could help collaborate and achieve this minimalist approach.
The more robust option
would be a wiki (as Siburke suggested), and dedicated storage, either on TFormers or some volunteer's server. This would be the optimal solution in my eyes, and would hope a similar minimalist image-storage approach as above would be used... if necessary

All of this, of course, are suggestions of someone taking full advantage of some benevolent webmaster's bandwidth... and any/all/none of this would have to go through that person. Duh.
But unless Hasbro starts employing Jin to hand-make all of their figures (and thus make them too expensive for me)... some degree of cataloging solution seems like a good idea.
...ahem. ROBOTS
