It may surprise some, but not the artist of the song. Chubby Checker's 1961 hit, "The Twist", ranks as the most popular single in the Billboard's Hot 100 list. The song previously earned a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's "500 songs that shaped Rock & Roll". Rounding out the top 10 were:

2) Santana feat. Rob Thomas - Smooth
3) Bobby Darin - Mack the Knife
4) Leann Rimes - How Do I Live
5) Los Del Rio - The Macarena
6) Olivia Newton-John - Physical
7) Debby Boone - You Light Up My Life
8) The Beatles - Hey Jude
9) Mariah Carey - We Belong Together
10) Toni Braxton - Un-Break My Heart

Fondly remembers many a masturbation session...

I can honestly profess to not liking a single one of those songs.

All crap IMO. Especially #2, damn thing grates my teeth every time I hear it due to it's overplay factor

Wow, that list makes me hate anything popular.

Although the Beatles > you

and that Santana album is actually very kickass; he has a 12-minute jam with Clapton that rules

I'm not knocking Santana mind you (especially classic stuff with Greg Rollie)... just Rob Thomas

This is a much better version of "The Twist."

THANK YOU!!! I absolutely HATE that frickin song! Every time I hear that guitar riff it's like someone jamming broken glass into my ears.

Even more so, how does scarey Carey make that list? She's gotta be one of the worst I've ever heard. Hell, how does she make it anywhere in the top 1000? Same goes for Toni Braxton. And WTF is Leann Rimes doing in there???? I have no idea what that song even is.

The Macarena? WHAT????

Most of this list I might say were some of the greatest "fad" songs, but that's about it. They had NOTHING to do with shaping rock-n-roll what so ever. That would be more Beatles, Elvis, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, etc...etc...etc....

Get all that pop crap out of there. Real music stands up against time and most of that list won't. At least, not like the ones I've mentioned have.

I think the people at Billboard music spent too much time exposed to various "fumes" over the years.

The Santana and Everlast song is one of my favorites. Of course, I love Everlast.

YRLY. If you're using the Billboard Hot 100 to judge song quality...

*looks at recent plague of Katy Perry songs*

I'm guessing that skating rink needle drops and its endless inclusion in kid-friendly CDs and movies propelled "The Twist" to the top...
