Real Networks is set to offer consumers a way to copy DVDs to their hard drives... and in the process setting themselves up as a new target for movie studios. RealDVD is set to start being released at the end of the month for $30. Multiple licenses (up to 5 computers can be licensed per user) can be had for $20 each. The copying software will copy the DVD, including the Copyright Scrambling System, to the computer's hard drive. This will allow portability and DVD preservation without fear of illegal disc to disc copying, according to Real. However, it is expected that the movie industry; which does not want copying of any type done; will strike back. The CSS software is licensed from the proper authority.
