Almost everything in movies is a copy of something else. But they didn't use the same names or anything, therefore I could claim any story is ripping off an earlier one. But then why does the media need protecting anyway?

Article's a bit misleading: it's not Hitchcock's estate, but those who own the rights to the original short story for which Hitchcock bought the rights that are involved in the dispute.

I don't know the legal status of the story, but I will say, upon seeing the trailer for this film I assumed it to be a deliberate modernized remake.

Yeah I had always assumed this was a legit remake. Maybe the lawyers for Spielberg forgot to cover all the bases before the project was green-lighted. At any rate, I didn't see it as a "rip-off" but rather a remake. Many remakes often suck (like The Fog, The Haunting), but I thought Disturbia was decent. Not great, but decent.
