Yeah, but then they'd cast 50 Cent and make the shield a spinner.
In all seriousness, I'm all for so-called "colorblind casting" when it makes sense. And to be perfectly fair, Mark Millar originally wanted to make Ultimate Cap a black man but the Marvel head office shot it down. However, this just feels like OMG! casting for OMG! casting sakes--like making Richard Lewis play Himmler just because people will go "OMG WTF" and flock to theaters to see it.

I'll never look at Richard Lewis the same EVAR again! ROFFLES!
But yeah, don't care about Cap being black...but Will Smith? Can't we get someone a little more serious? Ah well, at least it's not "The Hoff" as Nick Fury bad.

Uh, FYI, Nick Fury's been black for awhile, not just for Iron Man dude, he's been that way since Ultimate Spiderman introduced him a couple years ago I think, he was even based off of Samuel L. Jackson. Kingpin though, he was only black because of the Daredevil movie, and because Vihng Rames is a badass.

If this is true, I will not see the movie. I doubt that it is true. After two successful movies, Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, both filled with fanboy goodness, I don't think that Marvel would be so stupid as to alter Captain America like this.
That said, I wouldn't even want Will Smith to play The Falcon.

The thing with Will Smith is, as one of my friends says...He always plays the same kind of character, but he manages to make it work within the context of the story. So, I think he might work very well from a narrative perspective. It's just...Cap is about as Arian Übermench as you can get.
Ofcourse, maybe it's not the role of Cap that he was offered: rather, it's the role of Falcon, for which I daresay he could work.

One thought me & my bro had was this: what if Will isn't hired to play Steve Rogers, but rather Isaiah Bradley, the Captain America from "Truth: Red White & Black?" Basically, the book (in continuity) says that the US government didn't just jump into the fire with both feet and start experimenting on white dudes with the Super Soldier serum, but rather pulled a Tuskeegee and rounded up some black G.I.s to experiment on first--leading to Isaiah Bradley, the black Captain America.
Slight tangent: go pick this graphic novel up & read it regardless. It's an awesome piece of work.

...was bad, yes, but nowhere near comparable to this kind of movie. "Hancock," yes. I mean, Hell, let's just heap on every movie Ewen McGregor makes because he was in "Phantom Menace."
THIS JUST IN:
Will Smith will NOT be playing Cap.Although I would like to see a "Truth" movie now. And I have to say, AICN's tone is borderline insensitive about this whole thing. But then again, what else to expect from big angry nerds, right?

Yeah it was bad but I think that's mainly in part to the director attempting to "recreate" the same idiotic MIB movie only a western.
FTR Will Smith can play whoever the hell he wants.
Just not Captain America. A change in race just doesn't make a lot of sense when Captain America has always been white. I personally had no problem with Kingpin or Nick Fury being black. They're more or less secondary characters unlike Superman, Batman, and Marvel's long list of superheroes.
Hancock was idiotic. It started out with promise (a superhero in need of reform) than after that went in so many directions I didn't know what it was trying to be.

This is not correct. Isaiah Bradley was a result of an attempt to re-create the Captain America serum. The formula that turned Steve Rogers into Captain America was lost, and they were trying to figure it out again, but Rogers was the original guinea pig.
Cap was kicking Hitler's ass in 1941, and
Truth takes place in 1942.
