Just imagine how things could have been different if in RotJ we found out Vader was
lying.
Hello, DARK SIDE...
Filled with LIERS!
Trying to MINDfarg you.
* sigh*

You won't find me defending RotJ, aside from the cool red uniforms those guards wore.
And I like the iconography of Black-Suited Luke with his green lightsaber, but mostly he sucked and Han & Leia may as well have been played by puppets.

I did really like the space battle stuff in RotJ, a lot.
...that's all I can do for you
Honestly, I think that ESB is the odd man out when it comes to SW films. RotJ has a lot in common with ANH (and I don't just mean the lifted plot device, lol). Maybe if ESB had been less of a real movie and more just a SW movie, we wouldn't have had these expectations of greatness when it came to the prequels etc.

my real problem with the prequals appears to be that I grew up and fricking lucas didnt.
if you suspend disbelief long enough and make yourself an 8 year old (my age when ROTJ came out) the prequals are really good and fun and scary and suspensful and visually pleasing with good actors
considering that 8 year olds are always lucas's audience apparently he did a good job
if you were a deeper 8 year old then me, then I do pity you even though you are not a fool

I think that there's another issue there as well... Star Wars was just a f*cking great movie, period. Contrast that one with The Phantom Menace, which had stuff that blew up real good, but which also had some truly sh*tty acting, too much talky talk, and a plot so convoluted it almost seemed clever but wasn't. Apart from anything else, it just wasn't a good movie. It looked pretty, sure (that's Lucas' strength), but you need a script and actors and stuff to make it work onscreen.

Point being, I loved ESB when I was eight, but I continue to love it today because it's a great friggin movie. The same is not true of certain other things I was really into at the time (

I think it's more that SW had the potential to be the greatest thing ever, but said potential was slowly thrown away over the years, and in such a manner that the original
was ruined somewhat, since there's no way to completely divorce your mind from that knowledge.
And I don't hate anything SW, it's always been a cherished childhood memory (I saw the

It's probably too late now, but my recommendation for the old show is to watch only the following: the pilot episode (Saga of a Star World), Lost World of the Gods, Gun on Ice Planet Zero, The Living Legend and War of the Gods.
Basically, because the original BSG was intended to be a set of made-for-TV movies, but at some point they decided to go weekly series (with the exception of the pilot, all of the above ended up as two-parters), which caused them to have to quickly write a bunch of one hour episodes to fill out the schedule (most of which were super-derivative and subpar, although Fire in Space and Hand of God aren't too bad).

I think Boxey works because they didn't over use him (except perhaps in Ice Planet Zero); plus, the relationship between him, Apollo and Adama feels genuine.
However, I can't agree with your assessment of Dirk Benedict, when you're ten years old his Starbuck is the coolest thing ever - my nostalgia glasses will not allow me to overlook how hammy his performance is now.

his acting is almost brilliant in its incoherence. I swear he must have been jacked up on coke the whole time or something.
Not that I noticed any of this at the time. I just thought he was cool cuz he smoked cigars in space.
P.S.
Thank goodness that RDM decided against using Dirk Benedict in the show at the end of season 1. Though from what I've read, it doesn't sound like he would have been too high on the idea anyway.

Just wanted to say I'm glad the prequels did me in years ago. Going into this as a fanboy with any of hope of it being good at all would have only resulted in emotional sadness, and empathy for once great legacy.
The Special Editions personally didn't irk me as much as the later dvd revisits after the prequals. I survived a little added CGI, Jedi rocks and whatever the hell else he did but that IMO is where he should have left it. To this day I don't own any of the movies on dvd and am perfectly content with my THX vhs tapes, and widescreen special editions.
Anything after that with the odd exception of the animated Clone Wars has been pretty much crap. (Oh and some of the sequel novel/comic adaptations by Darkhorse were pretty damn cool)
It's really too bad because I really did at one time have a lot of appreciation for the franchise.
Instead of weathering it I just ended up walking out of each prequel feeling more let down the last and now am to empathetic to care about the franchise one way or the other.

I would like a movie that grants attributes to characters we all think have those attributes even though they, like, completely did NOT show said attributes in the Holy Trininity (Original Trilogy), stuff like:
Boba Fett actually being a badass and not someone that got PWNED by a blind man.
Jabba the Hutt being an actual "vile gangster" and not just Santa Clause shaped like a worm that drools a lot. (Ho ho ho ho).
Admiral Piett commanding the biggest, most dangerous ship in the galaxy and not some guy that just looks at the camera with his "scared sh
