According to Wookiepedia Jabba's full name is Jabba Desilijic Tiure.
But then I guess if Lucas didn't write it himself it doesn't exist. Even if his name is on all those books saying that they're sanctioned by him. Because it's not like the books are only for the fans who mostly enjoy a single continuity, and get pissed when the original creator mucks everything up.

I believe the only true canon book out there (besides novelizations of the movies) is "Shadows of the Empire." Anything else can be mucked with.

I skipped most of this topic but I will give my 2cents
I watched the trilogy first when I must have been around 5 and loved it I then seen the first Special edition with the expanded cloud city and I thought it was cool.
but prequels killed it for me
so the force is just a nasty parasite that some how lets you use physic powers? but what pissed me off the most is how Anakins age jumped 10 years in the space of what must of been a year
*i did have a rant about how Maul was a waste of a good baddie and how I wanted Jar Jar to die but it was turning into a rant so I removed it*
so this new CGI toon is a waste that's cool I wondered why they were not giving it much hype. but I will say I don't think I was going to see it any ways given how I don't think they could do much more between the original films and the new stuff before totally f**king up continuity
Lord Madhammer
Aug 25 2008, 05:06 AM
lol dude, there *was* a ten-year jump between TPM and AotC, and the nasty parasite is just a medium through which humans can sense the Force. Not that there isn't still Jar-Jar and weak scripting and terrible acting and shallow characterization and bla bla bla.
Anyway, the wife went to see Clone Wars with the boys last night. The boys liked it, though my oldest didn't like it as much as he was expecting to -- he was hoping to see more clone action. But my six-year-old loved it, and he's probably right in the center of the target demographic for this show. (Also, my wife didn't have much to say about it, but she said that she liked this Anakin better than the real one. Yikes.)

I always took it to be the species name, like Chewbacca the Wookie, Greedo the Rodian, Wicket the Ewok, Luke the whiny little lolcat. This is the way it has been portrayed in the supporting media (i.e. NOT the films, which name relatively few of the alien species)...they speak Huttese, their home planet is Nal Hutta, etc. I don't think the films were ever clear on what a Hutt was, just that Jabba was one.
EDIT: oh, and that "they are gangsters" according to Capt. Panaka.

Unless its deemed canon by Lucas, i.e. the films and relatively little ancillary media ("Shadows of the Empire" and the original "Clone Wars" cartoon, though the latter may not be anymore), it's not official and can be tossed aside at any point. Its annoying, but in my experience that's standard operation procedure when it comes to novels-based-on-movies-or-TV-shows.
So if this new "Clone Wars" says Hutt is a clan name, its a clan name, and every other interpretation will be retconned as a misunderstanding in future books.

As I recall, before SotE came out, Star Wars was pretty much at the nadir of it's popularity - and they wanted to reenergize the public for the upcoming prequels, and therefore came up with the concept of a multimedia blitz that featured almost everything (books, comics, toys, etc.) that would go with a feature film release (except the film itself). I'm guessing that along with getting people excited about Star Wars again, part of Lucasfilm's strategy was to also get an understanding of everything they would need to have in place for the giant marketing push necessary for the prequels (don't forget, Lucas isn't a billionaire because of the Star Wars
films themselves, it's because he's always had control of the licencing and merchandising).
Since the entire SoeE concept was a pretty expensive undertaking, it was deemed "canon" to give the project the credibility needed.
