Full Version: Review: Universe Onslaught Figure

OK, so he's not a missile transport. He's also not the main connection point to a gestalt team. However, he is Onslaught. He's still a strategist, but this time he doesn't wallow in his failed tactics... he charges head on! Check out the second of the Ultra class reviews by using this link.
ULTRA MANGOS
i would have gotten him if he had hand articulation to rotate but because hi didnt it was a maybe but because of is wheel sound its an "i doubt it"
nomad1632
I think by far this is the strongest figure design in robot mode and alternate mode in the new classics line.
OP2K5
I seriously CANNOT WAIT to see what the modders do with this figure. Someone out there can take this design and work it into a torso for a Classics Bruticus. I know there are already modders out there just DYING to get their hands on this figure so they can start.

i love blitzwings' reviews.

i think out of the ultras onslaught has the best robot mode, i think powerglide has the best alt mode (i love planes, especially a-10's) and i think silverbolts robot mode is better than powerglides and his alt mode is better than onslaughts, but that's just my opinion

does anyone else think that it really sucks that onslaught and silverbolt aren't part of their respective combiner teams? it would have been incredible to have an ultra size torso and deluxe class limbs.
Soundwinder
Onslaught's the only of the Ultras I like at all. Great robot mode, okay alt mode... considering Powerglide's craptacular alt-mode and Silverbolt's G1-level transformation... not that hard, in my book.
timothyVritchey
what is so bad about powerglides alt mode..

No, not really. I'm not a fan of combiners at all to be honest. I'm up for a Universe Classics Combaticon team, but I don't need them to combine.
Nemesysprime
Great review but I have one amendment. The camed wheel "crashing sound" is actually an engine sound. Now heres the trick; if you put him in vehicle mode and push him along at the right and consistant speed, the sound loops and gives the effect of an engine running. It may take a few tries to get it to work right as you figure out the speed, but it's a great feature on this piece.

I may get one, only to give it the yellow & purple-camo treatment.

That was his worst color scheme IMO. It was just over the top gaudy. I mean really? Neon yellow and bright purple?

I got him the other day and I have to say he is awesome. Not the most complicated transformation, but still a very enjoyable one with alot of of pannels that slide and flip. The alt mode is alright, the mine sweeper turret and little features like the opening tailgate, and the flip down headlights add to the play value.

The robot mode, JESUS, this guy just looks angry and ready to fight, but still has an eery calm about him. He's very possable, and for a figure that has parts that make up the body he is very solid. Outside of the knees all the parts fit togetter near seemlessly. I wonder though why the cage parts on the inner legs are on a swivel hinge, as aposse to just a hinge?

Either way, this is one of the best figures that I bought in a long time. The same way Animated Megatron just has an awesome way about him, so does this figure. My only real grips which are minor is that the sheild doesn't fit well in alt mode and covers up some nice details, and the other is that if the legs(which are well ratcheted) are one click off, the side pannels won't line up right.

Minor issues realy, hardly even worth mentioning, but yeah, they realy did a great job on this figure!

Cadogen, Usually I agree with your reviews..... but not this time. This toy is nice but Powerglide is much more fun and a better value for the calss size. This is nothing more than an oversized deluxe.

A note about the MONZO "12782" markings. That's Monzo's birthday.
QUOTE
From TFArchive.com:
Onslaught sports markings saying "MONZO 12782" in vehicle mode. 12-7-82 is Monzo's birth date.

For those who don't know, Monzo is a longtime member of the Transformers fandom who is known as the master of the obscure. Feed him weird Transformers trivia and he is a happy man. He's also one of the two guys behind the Obscure Transformers website.
So why did Hasbro feel the need to reference him? One of Monzo's many hobbies is researching trademark information. He maintains a list of Transformers-related trademarks, and at least once year he submits a list of available trademarks to Hasbro. Presumably, this has resulted in quite a few names previously held by other companies getting reclaimed by Hasbro once they had become available again. So Hasbro apparently thought that a little "Thank you" was in order.

Just thought I'd share that bit of information...

Interesting find there, Detective. Must be one of Hasbro's attempts to reach out to the collectors laughlol.gif

It's all good man, if we all liked the same bot these reviews would be completely useless.

Why doesn't the review mention how the shield will not stay on the top of the vehicle, and the worst part of all, how his legs won't stay together in bot mode. He would be an awesome toy, but the leg problem knocks off two stars for me, and make him unplayable in bot mode.

Just my 2 cents.

Oh, there's a few more notes than I posted, but those were for other Universe figures. The bio for Acid Storm also has some tributes to Monzo, Sunstreaker's obvious "WE R 84" license plate, as well as Galvy and Silverbolt's "25" stamps. And no one (to my knowledge) has figured out what all the different markings on Powerglide mean, if they mean anything at all!

Back on topic, I'll end up getting all three Universe Ultras if I can help it, but I think Onslaught will be the first I get. His G1's RiD repaint, Mega Octane, brought me back into Transformers full time.

I have no problems with the shield in alt mode. On the back of the shield, there is a sliver of a peg below the lightbar hole. This coincides to a slot just behind the spotlight mounted on the front of the turret. Lock the peg into the slot first, then push back to fit the lightbar in place. Hopefully that will change your position. As for the leg problem, I'm not sure what you mean by his legs not staying together? Elaborate, please.
jmandawg
The left leg panel (inside of the leg) does not stay together.

While this might be true (I say might because I've yet to get Onslaught in hand), can't that be said of Animated Leader Megatron? Yet everyone gushes over that figure.
A simple transformation on a larger toy =/= a bad figure. If the end result is nice in both modes then it all works out.

Ditto - neither of those Cage-looking panels stay shut in robomode (on mine). Despite that and the missing paint app (one side of the cockpit's roof is missing that green), he's still one of the coolest Cons ever. Balanced. Menacing. Armed & mean.

Though I'd love to see a combiner team done PROPER; it would be awesome enough to have coordinating 'teams'. They could EASILY repaint the upcoming Hound into Swindle (new head please! kthx)

Each of the "cages" are held to the leg by a pair of pegs. Are the pegs just not holding or something? Because it's not a problem with my figure.

It's pretty well documented in this thread: http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/u...5209/page3.html

Just search for the word "legs".

If your onslaught doesn't have this problem, consider yourself extremely lucky. I think i might return mine and try my luck with a new one. Appearently there are some good ones out there.

It's like I said from the beginning, these should have been voyagers.

Ultra for the sake of added electronics is just wrong on so many levels. Had they been good SFX I'd say fine, but as is none too impressive.

Onslaught looks to be the best of the lot but the more I see of it, the more I'm thinking pass.

Here you say he charges head on, on the 'bio' it said he likes to be on the sidelines and command with tactics. They contridict each other icon_wink.gif

Kidding aside, this figure looks really great and your reviews have that 'jolt' i need everynow & again. Keep up the good work!

god i agree with this so much. i love this fig, and i love it that he's alot bigger than i thought he would be, but the electronics are entirely unnecessary and completely suck. the gunfire is ok, i like how the eyes light up, but the single whoop siren is ultra fail and the engine sound is just.... stupid.

I ended up liking this Onslaught figure a lot more once I finally had him in hand than all the pics I'd previously viewed. The detail & colors look better...he's just overall bad@$$! My only wish is that they would have made him, as well as Galvatron, voyager sized figures...I think the design team really f'd up the sizes on this batch of Decepticon Classics (with the exception of Octane)...Onslaught's just a little too big, and Galvatron's not nearly big enough...
JustLOKIPLVY
If ever I do actually bother with any of these.

I think Onslaught's the best.

Wish I could get some comparison shots of him and Red Alert from Cybertron.

If Onslaught's anywhere as awesome as that he shouldn't disappoint.

Didn't know the wrists turned. Thanks for pointing that out BK. thumbsup1.gif

Combiners suck.

I just got Onslaught about 30 mins ago and I had no idea Onslaught was this big!! I found it a little ghey at first but now I'm staring at him...a big bad a$$. It works. Great toy but ya, I have issues of things not locking in quite as tight as I would like. But whatever, it is awesome...does not take away from the looks of this figure at all. WIN
Ryu Hayabusa
i have to send mine back to hasbro, it was missing the grey clip part on his left leg...still a sweet figure though.

"Combiners Suck". Methinks the unfortunate poster who made such a silly comment needs to go back to Transformers School, eh readers?

Anyway, ridiculous comments aside, the Japanese version seems OK, but:

1/ It still doesn't combine (BIG negative for this character).

2/ There are no sound effects just for the robot mode (the siren especially sounds silly in bot mode)
.
3/ The arm gun seems unfinished. It seems to me that the nozzle "clipped" into another, perhaps bigger attachment).

4/ The "SWAT" details seem out of place (much better to have army design as he is a COMBATICON, not a "Urban Pacifier-otron".

5/ His wheel that activates the truck engine starter sound effect (not crashing sound, although it's hard to tell the difference with the sample they used) makes the entire alt-mode non-free-wheeling (in fact, it makes the alt mode go round in circles!). Im sure a quick mod by some peeps here will sort that design flaw out though.

I hope that some kitbash company makes extra parts for him to combine with, say, movie "blackout" (aka: Vortex), Animated Swindle, etc.

Hahahha....no. Learn to deal with the fact that people will have different opinions from your own.

Why do I dislike combiners? Well for one, the individual figures tend to suffer, as their possibility, transformation, weapons selection, or just their overall look is sacrificed for the sake of a combiner joint, a third "limb" mode, and a giant foot/fist selection.

Secondly, scale. Like most (sensible) TFans I recognize that scale is never going to be perfect in a TF line. Still, I can't really accept that a robot who is the combined form of a bunch of cars or construction vehicles can stand toe-to-toe with a robot who is the combined form of a bunch of jets. Sorry, no, doesn't work for me.

Finally, the characters suffer. I would rather get more unique characters by exploring the personalities of the individual team members then simple having them there to be "Devastator's foot" or "Superion's arm."
I prefer more characterization over combiners.

I'm not saying ditch the Constructicons, Aerialbots, etc....
By all means, release the individual team members. I would rather get five/six great-to-decent toys then one torso with a group of sacrificed limb-bots.

I've done that with the Constructicons, and I'm doing that with the Combaticons. I've got Universe Onslaught, Armada Cyclonus as Vortex, Cybertron Skywarp as Blast Off, and a Classics VS pack tank Megatron with a new head as Brawl. I'm just waiting on Animated Swindle. And I have no plans to kitbash them into a combined form.
