In a recent "Best of Sci-Fi" poll on Yahoo, Transformers came in third place on a list of 30 sci-fi greats. We beat all but one Star Wars movie which itself was trumped by IronMan

Wow...they use the term "Sci-fi" pretty loosely, don't they?

These polls normaly do, Ever see the ones for Metal Music!?! Horrible!!!

I was just happy to see all the high ranking movies that we beat out. To be honest after I got past the 15, I didn't expect to see Transformers make it at all.

Well, not to knock us, but from the looks of this poll, we seemed to be helped by being recent and fresh in people's minds. Because no way is Iron Man the best sci-fi flick ever made.

Yahoo users.

Whom, it would seem, have no conception of what "sci-fi" even is.

And whom, it would seem, are all under the age of sixteen.

This list needs more Fritz Lang's Metropolis!

I found Ironman to be one of the best films I have seen this year alongside The Dark Knight and Wall-e.

What a crock, everybody knows the best sci-fi film is Star Trek 2;the wrath of khaaan.gif

That movie still amazes me every time I see it. It's one of my all time favorites. The scene when the factory was exploding and the people where flying off the platforms...

best part is, they did it all with smoke, mirrors, some pullies and a bit of string. CGI may be here to stay, but nothing will ever look more real than real.

It's sci-fi because Captain Picard is in it. optimuslaugh2.gif

Also...

And there was another sequel, and then a novel.

It's based on a sci-fi novel, and IMHO it's a very sci-fi movie.

The book is great. The new movie sucked balls, but the one with Vincent Price was entertaining.

The new movie failed to take advantage of the whole point of the title, which the book did marvelously. Now, I'm okay with alterations to a story in order to adapt it for film (movies have to do this more than, say, a tv series) but one thing I really hate is when they change so friggin much it's almost a different story.

I'm okay with them not being vampires (glossing over some stuff, but still), the origin of the thing (and the thing itself) that's infected people, and the little details like the dog or the woman and the child. But they changed the core of the story itself.

In regards to I Am Legend there are two things that are at the core of the story. 1, Isolation and 2, the ending.

The ending is the whole point of the title I Am Legend, and they didn't even use it.

There were lots of other stuff I didn't like about the movie, but those are about the story telling techniques used by the film makers. What I'm mainly batching about is running roughshod over source material.

Maybe if I wasn't familiar with other iterations of the story, I would've liked it more. And this isn't just geek ranting, I'm an author so I think about this kind of thing a lot.
